The Short Sisters take uNi Coffeehouse stage on Nov. 10
Nov. 2, 2012
SPRINGFIELD On Nov. 10, uNi Coffeehouse Concert Series will present The Short Sisters harmony trio.|
The concert will take place at Unitarian Universalist Society Meetinghouse, 245 Porter Lake Drive. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Short Sisters is the name chosen by the acclaimed harmony trio of Kate Seeger, Kim Wallach, and Fay Baird.
Though neither particularly short nor sisters, they do have short first names and do often sound like famous "sisters" harmony trios of the past. Like those trios, they do amazing unaccompanied arrangements but also add plenty of acoustic guitar, autoharp and banjo for a diverse mix of music.
Seeger (a niece of Pete Seeger) lives in Massachusetts; Wallach, (well known songwriter) lives in New Hampshire; and Baird (banjo player and ringleader) lives in Florida. On those special occasions when the three reunite to share the joy of singing together, their fans too travel from far and near to bask in the sheer musical joy and great fun of a Short Sisters concert.
Their songs range from funny to moving, thought-provoking to frivolous, from American, African-American and British traditions plus contemporary songwriters. There are even intricate rounds, musical curiosities, chorus songs, ballads, and Sacred Harp songs.
Since 1979 The Short Sisters have pleased audiences from New England to Florida to California and on their five recordings. Their playfulness and pleasure in each other's company leave listeners energized and cheered.
