The Island of Jamaica – Ya’ Mon!

Feb. 20, 2014 |

By Don & Maureen Anderson – Owners of the Cruise Store With the Jamaican bobsled team competing in the Sochi Olympics, we cannot help but think of the beautiful island from which they came. Jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea about 90 miles south of Cuba, and is an island of lush vegetation, rolling mountains, reggae music and endless beaches. The three most visited tourist areas are Montego Bay, also known as “Mo-bay”,Ocho Rios (meaning Eight Rivers) nearby, and Negril, which is about 90 minutes from Montego Bay. Montego Bay – If you love golf, you are in luck as there are four championship courses in reach. Or you can go tubing; take a 4-wheel drive adventure; learn history with a visit to the home of the white witch- Annie Palmer at The Great House of Rose Hall; take a zipline over the canopy; go horseback riding on the beach; and of course enjoy a beautiful Jamaican beach like Doctor’s Cave Beach. Ocho Rios was the first town in Jamaica to be built with hotel resorts in mind. There is plenty of duty free shopping here, and some say the best coffee in the world, Blue Mountain Coffee – don’t go home without it! One cannot say they have been to Ocho Rios without experiencing the world famous Dunn’s River Falls and Park. A guide will help you climb UP the water falls-bring water shoes and tip money for the guide. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, try out some white water rafting, bamboo rafting, river kayaking or river tubing. Negril was a popular spot for hippies in the 1970’s and home of the spectacular Seven Mile Beach, which for years has been rated as one of the top 10 beaches in the world by many travel publications. Here is where you will find the more free spirited resorts like Hedonism and some other clothing optional properties, as well as many traditional all-inclusive resorts such as Sandals, Couples and Riu Resorts. A must-stop in Negril is Rick’s Café, where you can watch the cliff divers and hopefully stay for an amazing sunset. The Cruise Store/Vacations & More offer all types of vacations.
