CROP Walk rally to be hosted in Springfield

GREATER SPRINGFIELD A Recruiter's Rally for those planning to participate in the 2010 Greater Springfield CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Sept. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 361 Sumner Ave.

The rally will provide walkers and recruiters with necessary information and sponsorship materials for the 33rd annual Springfield walk, which will take place on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17.

The Greater Springfield CROP Hunger walk is one of 2,000 CROP Hunger walks that take place in this country each year.

CROP walks, the oldest continuing walkathons in the country, raise money for disaster response, anti-hunger and anti-poverty programs in 80 countries around the world, including the United States.

Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from this year's Greater Springfield walk will be donated to local service agencies. This year's local recipients will be Open Pantry Community Services, Inc., the Council of Churches' Emergency Fuel Fund, Western Massachusetts Food Bank, and Lorraine's Soup Kitchen in Chicopee. The remainder of the money raised will aid relief and development assistance programs around the globe.

At the Sept. 13 rally, recruiters and walkers will be given tips on fund-raising, as well as sponsorship packets and free educational materials. A light soup and bread supper will be provided by Branford Hall Career Institute.

For more information, or to RSVP for the Recruiter's Rally, call (413) 583-8355. Teams and walkers may also register online at www.cropwalkonline.org/springfieldma.
