|WALTHAM " The Massachusetts Medical Society and Alliance Charitable Foundation announced recently it has awarded a grant of $15,000 to the Holyoke Health Center to support its Healthy Weight for Women project. The center was one of three agencies in Western Massachusetts to receive grants from the society s foundation. |
The Holyoke Health Center (HHC) project is designed to engage Latina women in educational and other activities to promote healthy weight and positive lifestyles. Begun in 1970, HHC is a community health center providing medical and dental care to the uninsured and underinsured in Holyoke. The agency serves about 16,000 people each year, and has a second facility in Chicopee. For more information on the agency, visit www.hhcinc.org.
The two other Western Massachusetts agencies receiving contributions were Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Berkshires in Great Barrington and Ecu Health Care in North Adams.
VIM was awarded $20,000 to provide medical care and education to the uninsured and underinsured residents of southern Berkshire County. For more information, visit www.vimberkshires.org.
Ecu Health Care received $15,000 to support the agency s overall mission of helping the uninsured and underinsured people in eight communities in northern Berkshire County gain access to health care.
The contributions were three of 10 the foundation has made in its latest round of grant making in 2009, totaling $140,500 to support health and medical services offered by agencies across the state.
Others awarded grants were MetroWest Free Medical Program, Sudbury, $25,000, to meet the needs of the uninsured and underinsured in MetroWest communities; Friends of Boston s Homeless, Boston, $20,000, to support services for homeless individuals; Father Bills & MainSpring, Quincy, $10,000 for medical care to homeless men and women at its Brockton location; Open Door Free Medical Program, Hudson, $10,000, to support a Chronic Disease Project; Project Bread, Boston, $10,000, for an anti-hunger project targeting 2,000 low-income students in three Boston public schools; Health Awareness Services of Central Mass., Worcester, $8,000, for screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, HIV counseling and testing, and HIV case management services in Marlborough and surrounding communities; and the Sharewood Project, Boston, $7,500, to expand primary health care services offered by volunteer medical students for the underserved at the Malden Clinic.
