| Boomers have the huge responsibility of taking care of their aging parents, and more often than not their parents want to age in the comfort of their own home. Visiting your aging parents is a timely opportunity to assess and prevent threats to a senior's ability to live independently at home. Homewatch CareGivers has created the new, free "Guide to In-Home Senior Safety" for those important family visits and conversations (www.homewatchcaregivers.com).|
The facts are staggering: fires pose a major risk to elderly who are 2.5 times more likely to die in a residential fire than the rest of the U.S. population and home candle fires are a major culprit in addition to open flames, cooking, smoking and heating (www.nfpa.org). Candle fires alone accounted for over $530 million in property losses in 2005 and 38 percent began in bedrooms.
In addition, falls are the leading cause of death and injury for Americans over age 65, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. More than 35 percent of all seniors or about 11 million fall each year, resulting in over 13,000 deaths.
"Fifty percent of these seniors lose their mobility after a fall at home," Judy Yaffe, co-owner, Homewatch CareGivers, said. "Another 40 percent lose their mobility forever.
"Evaluating your loved one's environment needs to be done on a regular basis because a senior's ability to live independently will continue to change as he or she ages. We want to help families maximize safety and independence for their aging loved one. The simple steps in our 'Guide to In-Home Senior Safety' can greatly reduce the likelihood of unplanned hospitalizations and enable a healthier, more independent lifestyle for seniors," Yaffe said.
Homewatch CareGivers of Western Massachusetts provides non-medical in-home care services for all members of the entire family.
