LONGMEADOW Jewish Geriatric Services (JGS) has joined organizations around the country in the celebration of American Heart Month.
During the month of February, JGS staff members will be distributing heart health information sheets to seniors, and those in the healthcare community. These include heart healthy lifestyle tips, information about home health care services and an opportunity to request a demonstration of "telemedicine" vital sign monitoring technology. Seniors will be encouraged to take a serious look at those risk factors they can modify, treat or control by changing their lifestyle or taking medicine.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of disability. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. In 2009, an estimated 785,000 Americans will have a new coronary attack, and about 470,000 will have a recurrent attack. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and about one every minute will die from one (www.americanheart.org).
Jewish Geriatric Services is a leading healthcare system serving elders and their families. Programs of JGS include the Julian J. Leavitt Family Jewish Nursing Home, Wernick Adult Day Health Care Center, Spectrum Home Health and Hospice Care, Ruth's House An Assisted Living Residence, JGS Family Medical Care and Genesis House.
