LaCroix, Scott named to Go Red for Women executive committee

SPRINGFIELD The American Heart Association announced that Martha LaCroix, Yankee Candle executive vice president Chief Human Resources Officer and United Personnel Services Owner and President, Mary Ellen Scott, will lead the executive committee as co-chairs of the 2011 Go Red For Women Educational Forum and Luncheon presented by The Yankee Candle Company. The event will take place Feb. 15, 2011 at the MassMutual Center during American Heart Month. Go Red For Women encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. "The Go Red For Women luncheon will bring hundreds of local women together to focus on their most vital health challenge heart disease," Scott said. "As the leading cause of death in women, heart disease deserves our utmost attention. The luncheon is about what each woman can do as an individual to reduce her risk as well as what we can do together to fight this mostly preventable disease right here in our own community." Today, one in three females in the United States have some form of cardiovascular disease, but only 21 percent of women view heart disease as a health threat. And although cardiovascular disease claims the lives of more than 460,000 women each year causing almost one death per minute it is preventable through education and research. "I have been involved with the American Heart Association for many years and know how heart disease can impact individuals and their families," LaCroix said. "This event provides women the opportunity to begin the discussion and share real stories of how heart disease has affected their lives. It also provides useful tools and tips to make a plan to live a heart healthy life. Even as strides are being made in the fight against heart disease and stroke, we must help carry on this critical work." The Go Red For Women Educational Forum and Luncheon is the American Heart Association's signature event. All of the revenue from the Go Red luncheon will support awareness, research, education and community programs to benefit women. Since Go Red's inception in 2004, almost $44 million has been spent on women-focused research. Women from all walks of life are encouraged to attend the Go Red For Women Luncheon and learn how to take charge of their heart health.
