SPRINGFIELD On March 3, 2012, the American Lung Association of New England will once again step up against lung disease at the fourth annual Climb Springfield stairclimb.
One Monarch Place boasts 528 stairs in 24 stories. Proceeds from the event support the American Lung Association and their mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
While the climb participants make the event happen, volunteers keep the event running smoothly and really are invaluable to the whole process. This is especially true of Tiger Burton, who will volunteer for Climb Springfield for the third consecutive year in 2012.
Burton first heard about the Springfield stairclimb from a flyer posted at greater Springfield YMCA, where she is employed as a fitness instructor. She immediately contacted Bianca, the event manager, to see how she could help.
According to Burton, volunteering is not an activity that is common for her, but this particular event really caught her eye. Sadly, her brother passed away from a heart-related illness, who also possessed health problems associated with his lungs. Being a fitness instructor and enthusiast, Burton found herself intrigued by the type of workout one could get from climbing countless stairs at a time.
“I kind of got hooked on it as a different kind of challenge,” Burton explained. “Lung health is one of those things you take for granted, until there is some damage, and then it is too late. Having healthy lungs and exercising are important to me; it is the core foundation I have been building upon for eighteen years now with my own self.”
In addition to working as a fitness instructor for the YMCA, Burton is also a former health coordinator with Bay State Medical Center, also located in Springfield.
In addition to her passion for fitness and health, she is additionally an immense supporter of the American Lung Association’s mission. That is just one of the reasons why she is so excited about the event and is capable of recruiting volunteers, and participants, from all facets of her life.
Burton’s team consists of volunteers from the Greater Springfield YMCA, Bay State Medical Center, as well as climbers about 15 in all.
Each participant’s $35 registration fee and $100 fund-raising minimum go to fight all types of lung disease in the community, as well as providing invaluable lung health education and advocacy.
Register by Oct. 31 using early bird code ebne52 and receive a $10 discount on your registration fee. Visit fightforairclimb.org or e-mail bwalker@lungne.org for more information.
