Members of Eli's Excellent Eccentrics, one of many teams that participated in the Oct. 16, 2011 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes at Six Flags New England, received a star award for their fund-raising efforts on Feb. 28 at the JDRF Walk Awards banquet. The team of 20 was congratulated for raising $2,340 to support JDRF's ongoing research to treat and cure Type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Representing the team were, from left, Ken Brill of Longmeadow, Damon D'Amico of East Longmeadow, Harry Brill of Longmeadow, and 14-year-old T1D patient Eli Kessler and his parents Steve and Lisa Kessler, all of East Longmeadow. Jonathan Muskrat, executive director of the North Central Connecticut/Western Massachusetts chapter of JDRF, is shown standing behind the team.

The chapter's three walks raised a total of $637,000 toward research in 2011. This year's walk is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Six Flags New England.
