STCC offers 12-week phlebotomy course

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) will again offer its very popular 12-week course designed to prepare individuals for any entry-level career as a phlebotomist, a professionally trained and certified person who works in a hospital, clinical laboratory, or health-care facility and obtains blood specimens by venipuncture and microtechniques.

In addition to technical, clerical and interpersonal skills, the phlebotomist must develop strong organizational skills to handle a heavy workload efficiently and maintain accuracy, often under stressful conditions.

This course is approved by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and individuals completing the program will be eligible to take NHA’s national certification exam. This program approval means that the college’s curriculum and instructors meet or exceed the rigorous criteria established by the NHA.

The program is designed to prepare an individual to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture in order to obtain blood specimens for diagnostic procedures and will include a two- to three-week internship in an area health care facility.

Major topics to be covered in this course include: Anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system; safety and confidentiality; venipuncture technique and complications of venipuncture; patient relations and communication; capillary puncture; lab tests and miscellaneous procedures; infection control; quality control and processing of specimens; and multiskilling.

This program always fills up long before the start date and applications are now being accepted. Interested individuals should go to www.stcc.edu/wd or call 755-4502 for complete details and an application packet.
