VNA/Hospice seeks volunteers for training class

GREATER SPRINGFIELD Baystate VNA and Hospice is currently taking applications for a free volunteer training course this spring. Baystate Hospice, a member of Baystate Health System, is a non-profit agency serving the greater Springfield area, including West Springfield, Agawam, Westfield, Southwick and the hilltowns.

Hospice volunteers usually spend two or more hours a week with one patient at a time throughout the individual's course of illness. Their support includes companionship, errands and transportation for the patient, as well as respite for the family. Volunteers are especially needed to visit hospice patients in nursing homes.

Hospice is also seeking volunteers who provide specialized services, including therapists training in massage and Reiki to lessen agitation and bring peace and comfort to patients.

The program encompasses 21 hours of class time in seven evening sessions. Volunteers receive a certificate of completion at the program's conclusion. Monthly support meetings give volunteers an opportunity to share their experiences.

Class size is limited. Those who wish to fill out an application should contact Caroline Stanton at 794-6472 as soon as possible to allow time for the interview process.
