SPRINGFIELD — The first Anti-Bullying Scholarship Gala will take place in memory of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, a student at New Leadership Charter School, who committed suicide at age 11 after suffering repeated bullying and torment at school. The gala will take place on April 16, a day after what would have been Walker-Hoover's 14th birthday.

The gala not only serves to remember Walker-Hoover, but also as a fundraiser to raise money to support future scholarship efforts. Five local high school seniors will receive $1,000 each in scholarships at the gala.

"The reason for holding this event is to award scholarships in memory of Carl, to also celebrate his life and to continue to bring awareness to the drastic effect and impact bullying is having on our children," Gwynnetta Sneed, founder of The Carl Joseph Walker Hoover Foundation, said.

The gala will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. at The Log Cabin in Holyoke. There will be live music and a buffet at the event. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at www.carljoseph11.org.
