YMCA offers summer classes to help keep children active

WESTFIELD The YMCA of Greater Westfield has begun registration for summer classes, which begin the week of June 21.

Class offerings include: aerobic and fitness classes, including cycling, cardio kick, Bosu core strength training, Zumba, yoga, yoga ball, body shaping, stretch away stress, Pilates, Break dancing, kick boxing, active older adult fitness classes, pool fitness classes, youth and adult swim lessons, adult writing class, an introductory painting class for adults and one for kids, mindfulness meditation and a wide variety of gymnastics classes and gymnastics team.

The following classes will be offered this summer:

Gymnastics two one-week summer gymnastics camps for children ages six and up. Participants can choose to attend one or both camps; July 13 to 17 and/or Aug. 17 to 21. The camps runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and each includes more than 25 hours of gymnastic games, drills and skills on all four Olympic events.

Open swim is included each day. Cost for a one week camp is $155 for members and $170 for non-members.

Interpretive Dance one-week summer interpretive dance camp July 19 to 23. The program is offered for girls and boys ages six to 10 years-old and will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Cost for the one week camp is $75 for members and $85 for non-members.

Participants will learn how to interpret the meaning of music and express it in their movement, conveying emotions and feelings. The program is designed both for beginners as well as for children who have had some dance experience.

YMCA Feet in Motion Dance Director Amy Bouchard will be running the program. She has more than 20 years of dance experience and has studied at the Broadway Dance Center in New York City and with the Dance Educators of America.

Team Gymnastics classes begin the week of July 5 and run through Aug. 28 for eight weeks.

Classes are offered for children as young as 18 months through middle school age.

Below is a description of the two progressive class levels; preschool/kinder gymmies and the recreational level. Preschool and kinder gymmies classes provide an introduction to gymnastics in activity circuits of basic gymnastic skills and drills on equipment specially sized for preschool/kinder kids.

Class offerings are as follows: Me and My Tot Tumble and Splash two terrific classes back to back that parents enjoy with their 18 month to three-year-old child participating in creative movement activities in the gym and fun swim activities in the pool. This class will take place Saturdays from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. and runs from June 26 to Aug. 12; two to three year-old class offered on Mondays from 5:30 to 6 p.m.; three to four year-old class, offered on Mondays from 6 to 6:45 p.m.; four to five year-old class offered on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.

The recreational level, developing basic gymnastic skills in age appropriate classes, features the following classes: five to six year-olds offered on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.; six to eight year-olds offered on Tuesdays 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.; seven to nine year-olds offered on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. and 10 and older offered on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Class prices range from $36 to $90 dollars depending on the level and time.

Gymnastics team is also offered in seven different levels. Participants may choose to attend one or both sessions offered; Session 1 runs July 5 to July 31 and Session 2 runs Aug. 2 to Aug. 28.
