LONGMEADOW Thanks to a federal grant, Longmeadow firefighters will be more prepared than ever to deal with dangerous missions.

Through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, the Longmeadow Fire Department has received a grant of $25,061 to aid in the purchase of more protective clothing. The grant was awarded by the Department of Homeland Security.

"We will be getting 13 new sets of protective clothing," Eric Madison, Chief of the Longmeadow Fire Department, said. "This is a very competitive grant. With some programs, you can just apply and get the money, but this is not one of them."

Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry, along with Congressman Richard E. Neal, announced that the department would be awarded the grant.

"Longmeadow's firefighters put their lives on the line everyday and it's critical they have the resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively," commented Sen. Kerry.

Hundreds of grants have been awarded since 2001. The money has gone to equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. In addition to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, FEMA has also awarded the Fire Prevention and Safety grants and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants to fire departments around the nation.

With this grant, the Longmeadow firefighters will now have the safest possible clothing to carry out missions safely and effectively.
