Local Boy Scouts Troops 275 and 179 are hosting a magic show fundraiser on June 20 at St. Michael's Parish Hall & Community Center, 53 Somers Rd. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $8. Magicians from the Springfield Chapter, Society of American Magicians will be performing. Funds raised will help scouts defray expenses for a high adventure camping trip to Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron, N.M. in July 2009. For tickets or more info, contact Bob Glass at 896-1166.

The Annual Golf Tournament will take place July 28 at Elmcrest Country Club with a shotgun start at 12:45 p.m. Scramble format. Registration and lunch 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. $125 per golfer includes greens fee, cart, lunch, dinner and prizes. The E.L. Rec. Dept. is offering youth field hockey in the fall for those in grades 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8. The three leagues are limited to 20 participants each, so register early! A field hocking info and registration night will take place June 11 and 12 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the Rec. Dept. Come register and receive info on sticks and sizing, equipment needed and summer camps. (Sticks may be signed out for camp with a deposit.) Informal uniform sizing will also be done, so bring player. Any questions, call the Rec. Dept. at 525-5437.

The E.L. Rec. Dept. introduces a new program for the summer "What's Cooking, Kids?" a culinary experience for young chefs, ages 5 - 12. This will be a special taster cooking session of three days, June 30 - July 2 from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (the store will be closed to the public). Maximum of 14 participants. Register quickly so you don't lose a spot! Come into the Rec. Dept. weekdays.

E.L. Rec. Dept. still has openings at this fabulous day program for children in grades 1 - 6. Offering newly renovated facilities and staff so dedicated that 86 percent will be returning from last year! A new director, Neil Henderson, will be bringing lively, new programming to Pine Knoll. The E.L. Rec. Dept. reminds parents who wish their child to play Pioneer Valley Soccer in the fall that the deadline to register is June 11 by 4 p.m.! The tryouts will take place June 14 one day only! If your child cannot make the tryout they must inform their present coach.

The E.L. Rec. Dept. swim lesson program is back this year. Those 5 and older are eligible. Levels I - 7 will be offered. Three sessions will be offered June 23, July 7 and July 21. For more info, call 525-5437 or come into Office weekdays to register.

Mark your calendars now for June 26 from 3 - 5 p.m. when the Pleasant View Senior Center celebrates 50 years of service to elders in the community. This event is free and open to the public, and will feature local dignitaries, guest speakers, hors d'oeuvres, desserts and punch. Seating is limited, so come into the Senior Center office to sign up and get your entry pass. We are also selling T-shirts in our office commemorating this special event for $12, sizes small through XXL.

Would you be willing to commit a few hours a week to make a difference in a senior's day? We are in need of drivers to assist with our Meals on Wheels program, either on a regular basis or on a fill-in basis, specifically on Mondays and/or Tuesdays. Although this is considered a volunteer position, drivers are paid a daily stipend and will need to pass a background check. Stop by the Senior Center office from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. to learn more about the position and to pick up the paperwork.

The E.L. Democratic Town Committee will host their next meeting June 12 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the East Longmeadow Fire Station on Somers Road (Route 83). The E.L. Senior Center Book Club will meet at St. Paul Lutheran Church on June 24 at 10:30 a.m., 181 Elm St. All are welcome. The book of the month is "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. Summer reading for September will be "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett.

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Chapter 22l, will have their Spring Luncheon on June 10 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, 1080 Riverdale St., West Springfield. Social hour, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Luncheon, 12:45 p.m. All members and guests are welcome. The next regular meeting will be on Sept. 5.

The Quabbin Valley Twirlers Square Dance Club is sponsoring a square dance on June 14. It will take place at St. George's Church Hall on 33 Maple St. in Chicopee from 8 - 10:30 p.m. This is our last dance before summer and it will be casual attire. The Brownstone Residents Assoc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Foxwoods Casino on July 15. This is a good opportunity to see the new MGM Grand that has just opened up. The June meeting of the Tobacco Valley Artists Association will take place June 18 at 7 p.m. at Somers Senior Center, 19 Battle St., Somers, Conn. Artist for the evening is Kathy Gouguen of Holyoke, who has been painting for over 30 years and will present an oil demonstration. The public is welcome to attend.

The Hampden Senior Center, 104 Allen St., has scheduled a trip to Suffolk Downs on Aug. 13. Cost includes clubhouse admission, great buffet lunch overlooking the finish line, your own racing program, private betting windows, transportation and driver gratuity. Longmeadow School Depatment, Office of Pupil Services, will be destroying special education records for students with a birth date between Jan. 1, 1986 and Dec. 31, 1986. If you are interested in obtaining the file(s), please call 565-4210 ext. 26 or 30 to schedule an appointment to pick up the file(s). These records will be destroyed starting the week of July 7.

Volunteer help is needed to assist in the kitchen at the Longmeadow Adult Center, 231 Maple Rd. Duties include meal preparation, food service and clean up. We serve approx. 20 meals per day. The time commitment would be one day per week from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Additional help is needed on a more flexible schedule as a substitute and for special dinners. The Pollack Playhouse Summer Theatre will be accepting applications for their summer workshop production of "Seussical the Musical." The program runs from June 25 - Aug. 2 at Bailey Hall in the First Church in Longmeadow, with shows scheduled for Sept 5 and 6. It's open to kids ages 12 - 16 (ages are flexible; please inquire). The Fourth Annual Father's Day Pancake Breakfast, a benefit sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of St. Mary's, will take place June 15 from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children over six. The event will take place at St. Mary's Academy Auditorium, 519 Longmeadow St.

On June 12, Reeds Landing Retirement Community, 807 Wilbraham Rd., will host a presentation by noted local author Suzanne Strempek Shea. She will read and speak about themes from her new book "Sundays in America: A Yearlong Road Trip In Search of Christian Faith." Join the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Western Mass (NAMI-WMASS) for their annual walk-a-thon through Forest Park on June 22, rain or shine. Meet up at Trinity United Methodist Church, 361 Sumner Ave. Registgration begins at noon. The two-mile walk starts at 2 p.m. This is one of our biggest fundraising events of the year. Monies raised go toward assisting our mission of helping children and adults who have a mental illness, along with helping their families and friends. This tag/book sale will benefit Girl Scouts of Central and Western Mass. and will take place June 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 13 Princess Rd. Come shop for household articles, books, jewelry, etc. and help the Girl Scouts at the same time.

Local author Suzanne Strempek Shea will address the Springfield Rotary Club's luncheon meeting on June 20. She will talk about her latest book, "Sundays in America: A Yearlong Road Trip in Search of Christian Faith." The Springfield Rotary Club meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. in the Mass Mutual Room at the Basketball Hall of Fame, West Columbus Avenue, and is a proud member of Rotary International. The Rotary luncheon, with guest speaker Suzanne Strempek Shea, is $17 per person and is open to the public. On June 13 from 2 - 7 p.m., the St. Rose deLima Parish, 600 Grattan St., Chicopee, will host a blood drive (through Mercy Hospital) along with a used book and bake sale. Falcon Football Registration
The Wilbraham Parks & Rec. Dept. is registering boys for the Falcon Football 2008 season. Boys from Wilbraham/Hampden only entering grades 3 - 8 in September are eligible. Registration packets are available at the WPR Office or online and must be completed before returning them to the WPRD from June 3 - 14. June 14, registration hours will be 9 - 11 a.m. only. Registration must be done in person at the WPR Office. Practice begins in early August, 2 - 3 times per week or more at the discretion of the coach. Games are in Sept. and Oct., one per weekend. Generally JV games are on Saturday and Varsity games are on Sunday with about eight games per season. There must be 36 players registered per division in order to form a JV team.
