Class of 2012 unveils pacer

CHICOPEE — Principal Roland Joyal Jr. said the new addition to the courtyard at Chicopee High School should settle the question of "What is a pacer?"
Members of the class of 2012 and faculty members, joined Joyal and Mayor Michael Bissonnette in celebrating the unveiling of a sculpture of greyhound in mid-stride.
Bradyn St. Marie, secretary of the class of 2012, explained to Reminder Publications the students had begun raising funds for the statue since their freshman year. They brought in $5,000 to pay for the statue.
Created by Arthur Moses, the statue is made of strips of copper welded together to form a dog in flight.
"I've never been to a greyhound race," Moses said at the dedication. "But in photos they are always very dynamic."
His choice for a pose was a dog with its rear feet down, front feet raised. He said he wanted the dog to be "strong, bold and forging forward — always in flight, never touching the ground."
Moses added this pose reflects what he thinks is the characteristic of the class.
Moses expressed pride in his association with the city of Chicopee, as he has been a faculty member at Elms College for the last 40 years.
"This class was a great class," Joyal said.
