The Q brings savory South Carolina BBQ to Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – The savory flavors of South Carolina Barbeque can be tasted right here at Springfield’s newest eatery.

Chris and Craig Spagnoli opened the Q, 890 State St., June 2.

“My Dad and I have been partners in developmental deals and this was another deal. My wife, Sarah, is from South Carolina and there’s no barbeque around here, so we thought it’s a great opportunity” Chris said.

“This is our first restaurant,” Craig added. “We’ve done developmental work with the city before. Our first project was six years ago. We’ve worked on 30 Belmont and 65 Belmont Ave. The mayor has been behind us 100 percent and our Forest Park track record helped.”

Chris has a history of working and managing restaurants that compliments the professional relationship he has with his father.

“I was a sous chef in Hudson, New York, at the Charleston,” Chris said. “Then I moved to Albany and was involved in various restaurants there. I’ve worked at Sam Cook’s on Cape Cod and various places in Colorado.”

The Q is bringing more than 16 jobs to the State Street corridor and features attended parking behind the restaurant.  Located across the street from the former Indian Motorcycle factory, the restaurant pays homage to the manufacturing legacy by displaying an Indian model inside the building near the bar, but the real attraction is the tap beer and the food.

“All our food is homemade in house,” Chris said. “The only thing that’s frozen is the ice cream.  We have a smoker that can handle 700 pounds of meat at one time. We use real hickory and have all three types of sauce: mustard, vinegar and tomato.”

Chris hopes the Q will be attractive not only to the neighborhood, but also draw in students from surrounding college campuses.

“We want to bring in college students in the area, [American International College], Springfield College, and Springfield [Technical Community College]. They don’t have anywhere to go and we want to provide more options,” Chris continued. “Look at Amherst, students can use their cards at all the restaurants and we want to do that here. We have free Wi-Fi and plenty of outlets where they can plug in their laptops.”

Mayor Domenic Sarno said, “This is a great investment in the State Street corridor. Excellent service, excellent food and excellent hospitality.”

Springfield City Councilor Melvin Edwards said the Q is exactly what the city needs to help revitalize the neighborhood. “I was born and raised in this neighborhood. I remember when State Street was a vibrant shopping center and this is a shot in the arm.  I applaud the Spagnoli Family for the work they’re doing.”

Councilor Kenneth Shea added, “It’s great to have people from outside of Springfield showing commitment and investment. You can’t get better barbeque unless you go to South Carolina.”
