EAST LONGMEADOW
SENIOR FRIENDSHIP CLUB
The E.L. Senior Friendship Club will have an Island Theme Party featuring John Banker (sponsored by the Mass. Cultural Council) following lunch on April 16 at the Pleasant View Senior Center. Noon luncheon is Waikiki meatballs, lemon rice pilaf, glazed carrots and banana pudding ($3). Call 525-5436 at least one day in advance for reservations.
SENIOR CENTER CLOSED
The Pleasant View Senior Center will be closed on April 20 in observance of Patriot's Day. No Meals on Wheels will be delivered.
MAH JONGG LESSONS
Beginning April 14, the Mah Jongg group at the Pleasant View Senior Center will be giving free lessons for four weeks from 1 - 3 p.m. Limited to 12; call the senior center to sign up, 525-5436.
BAKED CHICKEN DINNER
The American Legion, 3 Legion Ct., will be hosting a baked chicken dinner on April 23 at 6 p.m. Menu: baked chicken, baked potato, peas and carrots, rolls, dessert, coffee, tea and soda, for $9. For tickets, call 525-2058 after 4 p.m. or 592-0956.
"NO SENIORS LEFT INSIDE"
As part of our "No Senior Left Inside" open house event on May 13, we are promoting hobbies, crafts and collections residents may like to share, or perhaps you belong to a club that is welcoming new members. To reserve a table, contact Sandy at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 525-5436.
GARDEN CLUB
The April meeting of the E.L. Garden Club will feature Nancy Hubert, expert horticulturist, who will present "The Incredible Edible Apple" to members and guests on April 16 at noon in Fellowship Hall of the Congo Church on the rotary. She will speak about the economics of apples and their place in modern farming and will also present apple recipes, both historical and modern. Guests always welcome for a fee of $2.
TAG SALE
The Morning Glory Walkers will conduct a tag sale at the Pleasant View Senior Center on April 25 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. You may begin bringing in items in good condition to the Senior Center on April 21 (we are closed Monday for Patriot's Day). No furniture or appliances please.
AMERICAN LEGION OPEN HOUSE
Commander Brian Tidlund of E.L.'s Gunther-Rowley American Legion Post 293 has announced an open house at their Post Home on Legion Court (off of Crane Avenue) on April 19 from 1 - 6 p.m. All veterans are invited to attend and find out more info about the benefits of an American Legion membership. The American Legion is the largest American veterans organization, representing veterans and active duty interests in Washington, D.C., and assisting their members with VA claims and benefits.
EARTH DAY CLEANUP
Mother Earth calls to action all students, family and friends in honor of Earth Day to clean up school grounds at ELHS on April 18 from 10 a.m. - noon (meet in front of the tennis courts). Students sign in for community service credit. Just show up and go to work! Wear your work clothes, gloves and sturdy boots/shoes. Bring trash bags! Pick up trash on the school grounds, the woods surrounding the grounds, the football field and the pond behind the football field. Filled trash bags can be left at the dumpsters behind ELHS. MAKE YOUR OWN STORYBOOK
On April 21 from 10:30 a.m. - noon, make your own storybook at the E.L. Library. Children of all ages are invited to drop-in and create their own book. We will have three creation stations for our budding authors to visit Build a Character, Build a Setting and Create the Action. All books will be displayed in the library. No registration required, and all materials will be provided.
GIRLS SOFTBALL

ELRA INFORMATIONAL MEETING
The E.L. Rec. Assoc., an association of E.L. Rec. Dept. youth sport programs, invites you to attend an informational meeting regarding the purchase of land on April 13 at 7 p.m. in the Pleasant View Building, 328 N. Main St. This will provide info about the proposed purchase at the Town Meeting in May and identify persons interested in joining a group to raise awareness of need for additional rec. space and to raise funds to improve facilities and support the current five-year plan being implemented by the DPW.
WOMENS AEROBICS & STRENGTH TRAINING PROGRAMS
The E.L. Rec. Dept.'s next session of women's aerobics will begin April 21 at 5 or 6 p.m; April 22 at 6 p.m. Strength training will begin April 22 at 5 p.m. Classes last 10 weeks. Come into the Rec. Dept., Mon. - Fri., 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. to register.
MARLINS COMPETITIVE SWIM
The E.L. Rec. Dept. will host registrations for the spring/summer Marlins Competitive Swim Team on April 15 and 16 at ELHS Cafeteria from 7 - 8 p.m. Practices begin May 4 at ELHS and end with championships at end of July. After the April 16, registrations can be taken in the Rec. Office from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Mon. - Fri.
PINE KNOLL ACTIVITY CENTERS
Reminder to parents that E.L. Rec. Dept. is currently accepting registrations for the 2009 season at Pine Knoll. Those who are 4 or 5 yrs. old are eligible as well as those who complete K - 8 grades in June. A Jr. Counselor Program (CIT) is available for those completing grades 7 and 8. BOOK CLUB
The next meeting of the Book Club will be on April 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. April's book is "The Tender Bar: A Memoir" by J.R. Moehringer. The Book Club is free and open to all.
BOTTLE & CAN DRIVE
Pioneer Gymnastics will be having a bottle/can drive from April 13 - 18. All proceeds will go towards sponsoring our team girls for various competitions throughout the year. You may drop off your bottles at Pioneer Gymnastics, 45 Maple St., Monday - Friday (9 a.m. - 7 p.m.) or Saturday (9 a.m. - noon).

BOOK DISCUSSION
"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" by Mark Haddon will be discussed at the Hampden Senior Center on April 16 at 12:30 p.m. This discussion, part of Hampden's One Book, One Community, is free and open to the public. CHILDREN'S BOOK DISCUSSION
"Al Capone Does My Shirts" by Gennifer Choldenko will be discussed at the Hampden Public Library on April 15 at 2:45 p.m. The program, part of One Book, One Community, is open to students in grades 5 - 8 who have read the book. Prizes will be given for anyone who comes with info about autism syndrome, Al Capone or Alcatraz. TWB students can take the bus to the library. Just bring a note to school. This program is free. No registration required.
"BROWN GOLD" FUNDRAISER
The Hampden Lions Club will host its annual "Brown Gold" fundraiser on April 18 and 25, when fertilizer that is commonly used in flower and vegetable gardens will be delivered to residents. Fertilizer is available in individual bags for a cost of $3, or by the truckload at a cost of $50. Purchasers do not need to be home on the delivery date. LONGMEADOW IDOL
Middle school finalists will compete on April 15 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the LHS Auditorium to be the next "Longmeadow Idol." The LHS Interact Club will use all proceeds raised from ticket sales, raffle tickets, baked goods and program advertising to make a donation to Shriners Hospital in Springfield. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from Interact members and are $7 for adults, $5 for children. If unable to attend but want to make a donation to Shriners Hospital send a check payable to LHS Interact Club c/o Ariel Miller, 60 Greenwich Rd., Longmeadow, MA 01106. CABLE ADVISORY MEETING
The next meeting of the Cable Advisory Committee will be on April 14 at 7 p.m. in room 5 at Longmeadow High School.

FOOD SERVICE FORUM
There will be a public forum on the Longmeadow Public Schools' food service program on April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Glenbrook Middle School Auditorium, 110 Cambridge Circle.
BASIC RIGHTS WORKSHOP
April 15, 7 p.m. Basic Rights Workshop with Ellen Chambers, advocate and founder of SPED Watch, School Committee Room, LHS, 127 Grassy Gutter Rd. This workshop will provide families detailed info to their rights and responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Massachusetts Special Education Law & No Child Left Behind (NCLB). She will also answer questions and discuss strategies she has found successful in her work as an advocate and with SPED Watch. This workshop is free and open to the public. KIDS KNITTING AND CROCHETING
The Philip Michael Lauro II Discovery Room at the Storrs Library will offer a six week series of three afterschool groups to meet, learn and create with yarn. Groups are open to students in grade four and above and begin April 22. Each group will work on a variety of stitches, techniques and small projects. Registration is through April 17. GIRLS SPRING VOLLEYBALL CLINIC
Join LHS Varsity Coach George Mulry and his players for this high energy, skill packed one day clinic. Participants will learn the fundamentals and techniques from high school players. Activities will focus on drills and skill development including serving, passing, hitting, setting and blocking. Clinic will meet on April 23 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the LHS gym. FALL YOUTH SOCCER REGISTRATION
This popular program, with approx. 1,000 participants last year, will run September -- November. Kids in grades K - 8 are eligible. Practices take place on one weekday or Saturday each week with games on Sundays. Optional travel teams play on Saturdays and Sundays. Uniforms will be provided. Sign up dates are April 14, 16, 27 and 29 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Longmeadow Community House.
SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION
Summer camp registration is about to begin! Remember to have your child's health and immunization records updated by your pediatrician. Licensed camp registrations require these forms be current within the last 24 months prior to your camp date. If you have handed in health forms in the past, they may already have been disposed of if they were not current enough for this year's camp season. Call 565-4160 if you are not sure. Camp registrations will not be accepted without these forms no exceptions.
