EAST LONGMEADOW
FLU INFO SESSION
The E.L. Council on Aging will be hosting a seminar entitled "Flu, What can YOU do?" The focus of the video presentation facilitated by Joanne Andrews, public health nurse, will be educating individuals on how to reduce the risk and reduce the spread of a flu. The seminar will also target caregivers who are caring for someone with a disability. The workshop will take place on Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St.
EAST LONGMEADOW HS PTO
On Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in the high school conference room the ELHS PTO will meet. The high school administration will be in attendance for what will be an informative and educational meeting.
HAVE A PIANO TO DONATE OR SELL?
The Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St., is in urgent need of a piano in good condition for the Senior Chorus rehearsals and performances, and other upcoming programs. Call Dottie Bensley at 525-6190 if you have one to sell or donate.
LUNCH & LEARN PROGRAM
The Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St., will welcome Michele Elicks from the RMV on Aug. 13 at 11 a.m., who will present a program called "Shifting Gears" about safe driving for elders. All are welcome to stay for lunch, "brown bag it" or make a reservation a day in advance for our special "Beach Party Picnic," featuring hot dogs, macaroni salad, sliced cucumber & tomato and watermelon.
MATURE DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM
On Aug. 14 and 15, the Pleasant View Senior Center will host the AARP Mature Driver Safety Program. The course runs two days, running from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., which includes a lunch break. "Brown bag it" or call the Senior Center to reserve yours. Course focus is on the aging process affecting hearing, eyesight, driver response time and how to recognize and compensate for these conditions. The cost is $10, and includes a workbook and video. You must attend both classes to get a certificate of completion. Sign up in the Senior Center office and pick up a brochure with more details. Course size limited to 30. Be advised there is no written test to pass, nor will this course have any effect on your driver's license.
COMMODITIES DISTRIBUTION
Commodities will be distributed on Aug. 20 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. To qualify, you must be an East Longmeadow resident of any age, and you must demonstrate need by showing documentation of your participation in any of the following programs: Welfare, AFDC, Food Stamps, Fuel Assistance, WIC, SSI, Medicaid, Veteran's Aid, Head Start, or sign a statement showing your Gross Yearly Income falls at or below certain amounts. You must sign up at the Senior Center and will be given a ticket which you will keep for the year. No commodities will be given without a ticket.
EAST LONGMEADOW REMEMBERS
The E.L. Fire Department will host a candle light vigil on Sept. 11 at 7:45 p.m. on the front lawn of the fire station in remembrance of the thousands of victims of 9-11-01. The public is invited to attend this and in your own way, to remember those victims: fallen firefighters, police officers, emergency medical workers and civilians. Any questions, call the department, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
FREE HEALTH & WELLNESS SEMINAR
The Holistic Life Institute, 280 N. Main St., is offering a free health and wellness seminar on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. The seminar will focus on nutrition for optimal health and the importance of detoxification. Everyone is welcome. Call to register at 525-7500.

The Holyoke, Chicopee and South Hadley Libraries and Jericho invite you to join them at the Log Cabin Banquet and Meeting House, 500 Easthampton Rd., Holyoke, for the Riverboat Ramblers Lobsterfeast on Aug. 20. ORCHID GREENHOUSES
Leilani and Harold Norman of Aloha Enterprises, 7 Maple St., Monson, are announcing their annual open house Aug. 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. both days. After their wonderful growing season, the orchids are beautiful. Many new hybrids and some divisions of awarded plants from their collection will be available. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY
The next collection day is scheduled for Sept. 13. The event will take place in the East Longmeadow Fire Station parking lot on Somers Road from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. Participating towns include East Longmeadow, Hampden, Longmeadow, Ludlow and Wilbraham. BLISS PARK CROSSING GUARD
The Longmeadow Police Dept. and the Longmeadow Parks & Rec. Dept. are pleased to announce that crossing guard services will be continued for the summer of 2008 at Bliss Park. For the safety of all pool patrons, a crossing guard will be provided Monday - Friday from 12:45 - 4:45 p.m. at the corner of Westmoreland Avenue and Laurel Street. Pool and park users are encouraged to cross at this location.

Please be advised that registration for any licensed Longmeadow Parks & Rec. camps will not be available online beginning two weeks before the camps start date. However, registration may still be processed in our office during normal business hours, provided there is still space available. HISTORY OF MOUNTAIN PARK
A lecture and slides presentation taking place Aug. 13 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. The Storrs Library Adult Summer Reading Program will conclude with a reception and lecture. Jay Ducharme, a second generation employee of Mountain Park and author of a recently published book about the park, will show slides and discuss the history of Mountain Park. BLOOD PRESSURE READINGS
Chicopee Visiting Nurse Association will have a nurse at the Hungry Hill Center on Aug. 18 from 9 - 11 a.m. Hemoglobin screening, along with blood pressure readings will be offered. This is a free service to area seniors.
EXERCISE CLASSES & LINE DANCING
Low impact aerobic classes at the Hungry Hill Center on Monday and Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Chair exercise on Monday at 1 p.m. and line dancing on Friday at 10 a.m. All ages are welcome to participate this summer. There is a fee for the low impact aerobic classes only. Classes are sponsored by the city's Department of Elder Affairs. Advance registration is not required. DOG LICENSES
Town Clerk Beverly Litchfield wants to remind those residents that have not licensed their dog(s) for the current year that they only have until Sept. 5 to do so. After that date, those owner's names that have not complied with the State Law will be compiled and forwarded to the Palmer Court as a complaint beginning Sept. 8.
