AGAWAM FRIENDS MEETING WITH MAYOR The Friends of the Agawam Senior Center will be having a meeting at the center on Feb. 6 at 9 a.m. with special guest, Mayor Susan Dawson. All seniors are encouraged to attend.
VALENTINE SURF AND TURF DINNER Friends of the Agawam Senior Center's Valentine Surf and Turf dinner will be Feb. 15 at the senior center. Seating will start at 5:30 p.m. Dinner consists of baked stuffed shrimp, chicken francais with rice florentine, steamed broccoli, sweetheart cake and chocolate covered strawberries. Donations: $12 adults, $5 for children under 10. Everyone is welcome to attend, no matter what age. Call the senior center at 821-0605 to purchase tickets. Get you tickets early because they are selling fast.
MOHEGAN SUN Friends of the Agawam Senior Center and King Ward tours presents Mohegan Sun Feb. 25. Mohegan Sun is one of the world's most amazing destinations with over 300,000 square feet of gaming excitement, an indoor seven-story waterfall, the world's largest and most spectacular planetarium dome and the awe-inspiring Wombi Rock. CULTURAL COUNCIL FUNDRAISER The Agawam Cultural Council is having a fundraiser at On the Hill Restaurant, 7 Southwick St., Feeding Hills on March 12. With a St. Patrick's Day theme, the meal choices will be corned beef and cabbage, baked stuffed chicken, meat loaf or meatballs and spaghetti. Everyone gets a drink, soup and dessert. Entertainment will be provided by the "Good Acoustics," a local Agawam group consisting of Mike Smith, Bill Desanty and Dave Fazio. There will be two seatings: 5:30 - 6:45 p.m. and 7:15 - 8:30 p.m. Capacity is 50 people per seating, so get your tickets early. Tickets are available in advance at the restaurant.
GREG CAPUTO QUARTET The Greg Caputo Quartet will perform at Agawam Public Library, 750 Cooper St., on Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Caputo's drumming is respected internationally. He is noted for his performances with Count Basie, Les Brown, Artie Shaw and Sammy Davis Jr. He will lead a quartet of world class musicians in tribute to the music of the Swing Era. The concert is free and open to the public.
ANNUAL MEETING The Friends of the Agawam Public Library wishes to announce that it will be holding its annual meeting on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Agawam Public Library. This meeting is open to the public. The election of officers will be taking place. All members who have paid their 2008 dues will be eligible to vote. Anyone interested in joining the Friends organization may pay his or her dues at the beginning of the meeting to become eligible to vote.
POT ROAST DINNER St. David's Episcopal Church, 699 Springfield St. in Feeding Hills, will be having a baked ham dinner on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. The menu includes baked ham, scalloped potatoes, mixed vegetables with cheese sauce, garden salad, bread and butter, bread pudding with lemon sauce and coffee, tea or lemonade. Tickets are $9 for adults, $4 for children ages five - 12 and free for children under five. Tickets can be reserved by calling the church office at 786-6133.

SALUTE THE WORLD CHAMPIONS The Chicopee Parks & Rec. Dept. is offering a three-day weekend trip to Toronto, April 4 - 6 to see the Red Sox play the Blue Jays. Package includes motorcoach transportation, field level seats for two games and nightly accommodations in the heart of Toronto. A narrated tour of the city along with a visit to Niagara Falls are also a part of the trip. Space is limited and available on a first come basis. UNDERSTANDING WINE COURSE The Center for Business and Technology at STCC announced they will offer a wine appreciation course that will provide participants with a detailed introduction to the wines of Europe, Australia and the Americas through guided tastings of more than 80 wines. Taught by Gary Sandman, a local wine expert, the course will cover all major varieties of wine. In addition to tasting, discussion will include matching wine with food, how and why to store wine, the effects of aging and what makes great wine great. KNITTERS The Hungry Hill Center knitters will once again be making mittens, hats and scarfs to be donated to the schools in their neighborhood. The center supplies the yarn. PARADE COMMITTEE BALL The Springfield St. Patrick's Parade Committee Awards Presentation and Coronation Ball will be Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Log Cabin. SPRING LECTURE SERIES AT WSC Nadera Shalhoub Kevorkian, an internationally recognized human rights expert and criminologist, will offer insights on the challenges women face in war-torn parts of the world in a presentation at Westfield State College on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Scanlon Banquet Hall. Kevorkian, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, will present "Palestine and Rwanda: A Feminist Critique of Legal Systems in War Zones." She is the first speaker in the college's spring Guest Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public.
FREE HOUSING SEMINAR A free housing seminar sponsered by the Westfield Police Department will take place Feb. 28 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Westwood Restaurant. The goal is to educate owners/managers in Westfield on key housing issues and provide better quality people for owners/managers which will increase profits and cut down on police calls for service. RAND ART MUSEUM EXHIBIT Laurie Hiers and Betty Angell, both of Granville, are currently exhibiting their artwork at the Westfield Athenaeum. The exhibit will be on display in the Jasper Rand Art Museum through January. Angell has been making art since 1970. Hiers began painting in watercolor in 2000. She specializes in portraiture (both people and pets) and paints unique homes. The exhibit is open for viewing during all open hours of the Athenaeum, from 8:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. TRIP TO PARIS The Community Education Office in collaboration with the Springfield Museums is offering a trip to Paris, May 23 - 31. Travelers will experience some of the main highlights of Paris; the itinerary includes planned guided tours each day with free time for independent exploration. WEST SPRINGFIELD "TROPICAL SUNDAY" SERVICE Grace Lutheran Church on Route 20 will host the 10th annual "Tropical Sunday" on Feb. 3 at the 9:30 a.m. service. Congregation members are encouraged to wear "cruise fashions" and bake tropical desserts for the coffee hour that follows the service. The temperature will be turned up and the hymns will include rhythms with conga drums, maracas and castenets. All are welcome.
"WARM HEARTS AND TUMMIES" The members of Grace Lutheran Church bring food items to church for the Parish Cupboard every Sunday morning. For the month of January, the theme will be "Turning Warm Hearts to Warm Tummies." Members are encouraged to bring their favorite "comfort foods" for a cold winter day. This includes items such as oatmeal, hot chocolate, soup, chowder or stew, boxed dinners (Hamburger Helper and macaroni and cheese) and canned meals (beef-a-roni and ravioli). In February, there will be a bake sale and the proceeds will go to the Parish Cupboard.
