EAST LONGMEADOW
RELAY FOR LIFE DINNER
The Pizza Shoppe at 134 Shaker Rd. will be hosting a fundraiser in support of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life on May 20 from 5 - 8 p.m. There will be prizes to be drawn and Screech from the Springfield Falcons will be visiting to take photos with the kids. The Pizza Shoppe will be donating a percentage of the sales from the evening to the Relay For Life. Please call 636-7912 for further details.
"GREEN" FLEA & CRAFT MARKET
East Longmeadow United Methodist Church, 215 Somers Rd., will host its Green Flea & Craft Fair on May 31 from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Featuring flea and craft vendors, food consignments, kids' corner, perennial plant sale and bake sale and bring those old sneakers, print cartridges, eye glasses and cell phones to our recycle center located on the grounds. Come join us in our efforts to REpurpose, REcycle and REspond to our planet's concerns.
CALL FIREFIGHTER TRAINEES WANTED

DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING
The East Longmeadow Democratic Town Committee will host its next meeting on May 15 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the East Longmeadow Fire Station on Somers Road (Route 83). This month's guest speaker will be Rebecca Townsend of the Pioneer Valley Advocates for Commuter Rail. PINE KNOLL ACTIVITY CENTER
The E.L. Rec. Dept. Pine Knoll Activity Center Programs will run the weeks of June 23 - Aug. 15. Those who are 4 and 5 years old and "K" may attend the Adventure Kids half day from 9 - 11:30 a.m., Mon. - Fri. Those who are in full day "K" - 8th grade may attend the Activity Center from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Mon. - Fri. Activities will have a weekly theme, along with games, sports, plays, music, arts & crafts, swimming, dancing and nature. Come into the Rec. Dept. to register.
JUNIOR COUNSELOR (CIT) PROGRAM
The E.L. Rec. Dept. is offering a Junior Counselor (CIT) leadership development program designed to provide hands on learning, as well as educational information. Topics taught include first aid, effective discipline techniques, enhancing individual leadership styles, planning activities and creating positive work relationships. Time for hands-on learning and observation for group will be available. Registration is limited to 20 per session. Those in grades 7/8 are eligible for this program. Come into the Rec. SUMMER TENNIS PROGRAMS

SENIOR FRIENDSHIP CLUB
The E.L. Senior Friendship Club will celebrate 90+ birthdays with a special performance by the Senior Chorus on May 15 at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. Luncheon is chicken cordon bleu, mashed potato, broccoli and Jello. SPECIAL JEWELRY CLASSES
Make a special gift for mom or the graduate! Sandy Merrill will host a special class at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St., on May 14 at 1 p.m. Students can create a decorative zipper pull/purse embellishment and/or bookmark. This class requires a $2 deposit, and you must register as class size is limited to 20. The total cost of the class should not exceed $8 (including deposit).
DANCE PERFORMANCE
Collaborative "F" Fort Dance, an emerging modern dance company, will perform at the Pleasant View Senior Center on May 14 at 3:30 p.m. This energetic company consists of choreographers and dancers with extensive dance backgrounds and who live in Western Mass. and northern Conn. TENNIS ANYONE?
The Enfield Tennis Club, 226 Shaker Rd., will host a Senior Open House on May 15 at 10:30 a.m. to generate interest in tennis as a fitness activity for seniors. Tour the facility, meet staff members, or take a group lesson with a pro. Stay around to play against others or the ball machine, all free of charge. Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers, loaner racquets available. Please sign up in the Senior Center office.
COMMODITIES DISTRIBUTION
Commodities will be distributed on May 21 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. To qualify, you must be an East Longmeadow resident of any age, and you must demonstrate need by showing documentation of your participation in any of the following programs: Welfare, AFDC, Food Stamps, Fuel Assistance, WIC, SSI, Medicaid, Veteran's Aid, Head Start or sign a statement showing your Gross Yearly Income falls at or below certain amounts. You must sign up at the Senior Center and will be given a ticket which you will keep for the year. No commodities will be given without a ticket.
VALLEY RADIO READING SERVICE BOOK SALE
There will be a book sale to benefit the Valley Radio Reading Service on May 17 from 7:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. and May 18 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. The sale will take place at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. Sale includes paperback and hardcover books, including fiction, non-fiction and an array of specialty books. Valley Radio Reading Service is a non-profit broadcast service.
GREATER SPRINGFIELD
SPAGHETTI SUPPER
The Pioneer Valley USO is having a spaghetti supper on May 19 at the Knights of Columbus, Granby Road in Chicopee from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children, children five and under are free. This is a great way to support our troops and a non-profit organization.
BATTLE TO BENEFIT TEEN FUNDRAISER
Ten local teen bands will compete in the Battle of the Bands Competition, May 25, 6 - 11 p.m. at Springfield JCC, 1160 Dickinson St. This event is open to the public. The fee is $5 per person. This event is sponsored by the JCC philanthropic teen group, Don't Just Sit There (DJST). Proceeds from the competition will benefit Children International and Habitat for Humanity. Refreshments will be sold.
TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY
The Dow J ones Retirees Group has scheduled a trip to New York City on May 13, 2009. Deposit is due by June 27, 2008 to secure tickets. Pick up and drop off at the Plantation Inn parking lot in Chicopee. All are welcome. For more info, contact Carol at (860) 668-5822.
BAYSTATE WEST CHAPTER OF SUBVETS
The Baystate West Chapter of Subvets Inc. will be hosting their meeting at the WW2 Club on Conz Street in Northampton starting at 2 p.m. on May 18. Details on the visit to New London on M ay 23 to go aboad a nuke submarine, plus view sub-school graduation, visit the new diving tower are almost complete. Our picnic on Sept. 21 is ready to go. ACTIVE SINGLES
Active Singles (a non-proit group) is sponsoring an eight-day visit to Utah to see Zion, Arches & Bryce national parks. This event is for singles 30s and older. The trip includes round trip air fare, lodging, all food, plus horseback riding, rafting and bike riding. The dates are Aug. 1 - Aug. 9. We are taking 50 people on this trip. LONGMEADOW
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT NEEDED
The Longmeadow Adult Center, 231 Maple Rd., operates a loan closet of medical equipment. Residents may borrow walkers, commodes, shower chairs, high-rise toilet seats, etc. The Center currently has a great need for canes and wheelchairs. Shower chairs and transfer tub benches are always needed. Also dressing supplies of all kinds are welcome. If you have any of these items that you are no longer using, please call 565-4150 and donate them to the Center.
CAR WASH
The Longmeadow High School varsity and junior varsity teams will be hosting a car wash on May 17 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Longmeadow Garage (Mobil Station) at 467 Longmeadow St. The players are raising funds so they can buy equipment, improve the playing fields and purchase a storage building for their equipment.

The Storrs Library will offer a book discussion group for kids in grade 2 - 3 on May 28 at 3:15 p.m. We will be reading "Nixie's Song" by Tony DiTerlizzi, author of the "Spiderwick Chronicles." SENSORY INTEGRATION DISORDER

The district's Occupational Therapy staff will discuss what Sensory Integration Disorder is, how it can present itself in children and strategies that can be used at home and at school to address the child's needs. FAIRY TEA PARTY
Call ahead to reserve your space for the Fairy Tea Party hosted by Daisy Doos! TEEN CENTER
Youths in grades 6 - 8 and their guests are welcome to come and enjoy a supervised evening out on Fridays from 7 - 10 p.m. at the Greenwood Center. Admission is $7 per person. All students must sign in prior to entry. School dress codes are strictly followed. Teen Center is run and staffed by area college students. GOLF AND TENNIS OUTING
The Blueberry Hill P TO is pleased to announce that its Golf/Tennis Outing and Adult Social/Silent Auction will take place June 2 at the Twin Hills Country Club. All proceeds from this event go directly to the Blueberry Hill PTO, which uses the funds to support cultural enrichment programs at the school, provide much-needed supplies to each classroom and fund other special projects. TASTE OF DUGGAN MIDDLE SCHOOL
John Duggan Middle School at 1015 Wilbraham Rd. will be hosting their eighth annual "Taste of Duggan and More." This community fair will take place June 14 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Rain date June 21.) GAY MEN'S CHORUS
The Pioneer Valley Gay Mens' Chorus will sing at 10 a.m. worship at South Congregational Church of Springfield on May 18 as part of the church's eighth anniversary of voting to become an "open and affirming" congregtion of the GLBT community. Following worship, the chorus will also sing at the coffee hour, which will be hosted by the church's GLBT members. SELF-DEFENSE CLASS
The Wilbraham Police Dept. will be hosting a R.A.D. class for women ages 13 and above. The class starts June 4 and runs for four consecutive Wednesdays at the YMCA in Wilbraham, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The R.A.D. system is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. This women-only course begins with Awareness, Prevention, Risk Reduction and Risk Avoidance, while progressing on to basics of hands-on defense training. Mothers and daughters are welcome and high school and college-aged women are also encouraged to sign up. To register for this course, contact the YMCA at 596-2749; class size is limited to 20 women.
