CHICOPEE -- On one of the hottest evenings of the year, Holyoke Catholic High School students paraded in bright colored pajamas on the Veritas Auditorium stage at Elms College as two gigantic fans blew into the cavernous theater.
Performing Arts Club students have been in dress rehearsals for several weeks in anticipation of their September performances of "The Pajama Game," under the direction of Eva Stockhamer.
Stockhamer noted during an interview with Reminder Publications that she chose this show since "the music is fun, the costumes are bright and the cast was expandable." With more than 80 cast members, Stockhamer said "The Pajama Game" is the perfect musical since it involves many young people on stage.
"The Pajama Game" is set in the 1950's in a pajama factory, and was based on the original novel titled "7 1/2 Cents," according to Stockhamer.
"The new superintendent and the head of the grievance committee fall in love all while the union is trying to get a 7 1/2 cent raise for all of the employees," Stockhamer said.
She added the story is almost an "everything old is new again" plot line. "It is about standing up for what you believe in while trying to be happy at the same time," she added. "The music is funny and lends itself to the large cast."
Lead actors include Julie Geoffrey as "Babe," Mara Palma as "Gladys," Matt Iczkowski as "Mr. Hasler," Bryan Garcia as "Vernon Hines," Matt Pollette as "Prez," and PJ Adzima as "Sid Sorokin." The "Steam Heat Dancers" include Mara Palma, Liza Starzyk and Victoria Kachinski.
"We also have many other volunteers," Stockhamer said.
"The Pajama Game," will be staged at Elms College in Chicopee on Sept. 11, 12, 18 and 19. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m.
"This show features a great set, colorful costumes and great music that you might not know are from this show," Stockhamer said.
Tickets will be available at the door or by calling Diane Kachinski at 322-9028. Tickets are $12 general admission and $8 for students and seniors.
