Towne focus of evening at Wistariahurst

HOLYOKE Wistariahurst welcomes writer and teacher Tzivia Gover for a Historical Perspective on the fascinating life and career of Elizabeth Towne.

Founder and publisher of a magazine publishing company, Towne is an example of one of the city's earliest pioneering women. In 1900, the first issue of Nautilus was made in Holyoke. Withing a short space of time this little four-page paper had grown to be a handsome illustrated magazine. Almost 50,000 of Nautilus were mailed out of Holyoke each month. It was far and away the largest customer of the Holyoke Post Office. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $3.

Gallery hours for Wistariahurst Museum are Saturday, Sunday and Monday from noon-4 p.m. Admission to the gallery is $3 per person. Gover will speak on Oct. 3.

Wistariahurst Museum is dedicated to preserving Holyoke's history and inspiring an appreciation of history and culture through educational programs, exhibits and special events. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Wistariahurst is the former home of William Skinner, a prominent silk manufacturer. The museum is open for guided tours Saturday, Sunday and Monday from noon-4 p.m. For information or directions visit our website, www.Wistariahurst.org or call 322-5660.
