Scheiper is a leader

AMHERST Lauren Scheiper, daughter of Steve and Carol Scheiper of Longmeadow, was one of 13 seniors presented with 21st Century Leaders awards during the 139th Commencement of the University of Massachusetts Amherst on May 23 in Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

The awards are designed to recognize students who are academically accomplished and who have contributed to the university through exceptional achievement or have enhanced the reputation of the campus. The recipients are nominated by faculty for strong leadership qualities; noteworthy original research, community service, the achievement of success by overcoming extraordinary personal circumstances, or public presentation through art, performance or athletic ability.

This is the seventh year the awards have been given. The awards are sponsored by the Chancellor's Office and the UMass Amherst Alumni Association. "The presentation of these awards during the undergraduate Commencement helps focus the ceremony on the accomplishments of students," Robert C. Holub, UMass Amherst chancellor, said. "The awards also bring deserved recognition to the families who have supported this group of excellent students."

Scheiper is a communication disorder major with a double minor in psychology and linguistics. She is a member of the Commonwealth College. Her senior thesis compared speech-error patterns in adult-onset versus childhood apraxia (a motor speech disorder). Scheiper is the president of the campus chapter of the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association. She has been a teaching assistant and a research assistant. Scheiper was a counselor at a camp for children with special needs and for six semesters sang in the University Chorale. Her four years as an office assistant for the department of physics earned her a Gerald F. Scanlon Student Employee of the Year Award.

Scheiper will attend the Speech-Language Pathology Program at the Institute of Health Professions at Massachusetts General Hospital and pursue clinical research.
