Political writer Joe Klein to speak at MHCSOUTH HADLEY Joe Klein, one of America's best political journalists, known for his provocative and probing analysis of events in our nation's capital and abroad, will speak on "Inside Washington: American Politics and the Politicians" at 7:30 pm, Monday, November 27, at Mount Holyoke College.
The talk will take place at Hooker Auditorium in Clapp Laboratory. It is free, open to the public and accessible to all. Priscilla Painton '80, executive editor at "Time," will introduce her colleague. Painton is teaching a journalism course on campus this fall.
A former Washington correspondent for "The New Yorker," Klein is a senior writer at "Time." His weekly column, "In the Arena," covers national and international affairs, from Washington to Europe and the Middle East.
A self-described "political junkie" with a passion for public policy, Klein shares his views as America and its leaders face crucial decisions that will affect our lives and the course of international relations. In 2004 he won the National Headliner Award for best magazine column.
Klein appears frequently on "Meet the Press" and "The Chris Matthews Show." He was a regular contributor to "Paula Zahn Now" on CNN, providing political analysis during the last presidential campaign.
A veteran of eight presidential campaigns, he has been praised for his "dogged reporting, a thorough, subtle grasp of issues, and a clear-eyed, compelling style."
As "Anonymous," Klein wrote the number one bestseller, "Primary Colors," inspired by the 1992 presidential race. With three million copies in print, "Primary Colors" was on The New York Times bestsellers list for 25 consecutive weeks. It was adapted into a major motion picture starring John Travolta and Emma Thompson.
Klein's non-fiction books are "The Natural: The Misunderstood Presidency of Bill Clinton," "Payback: Five Marines After Vietnam" and "Woody Guthrie: A Life."
Klein's latest book, "Politics Lost: How American Politics Was Trivialized By People Who Think You're Stupid," was called by The Washington Post as "a highly entertaining tour of how political consultants progressively hijacked the presidential campaigns of the last 40 years."
The event is sponsored by the English department and the Office of the President.
