WEST SPRINGFIELD — The ongoing search for a police chief nears the final stages as finalists complete take-home exams due Nov. 5; subsequently the interviewing process will commence upon receipt of the completed tests.

According to Mayor Gregory Neffinger, the Public Safety Commission distributed the exams on Oct. 5 to the three candidates: Capt. and Interim Police Chief Ronald Campurciani, Capt. Daniel O'Brien and Capt. Daniel Spaulding.

Despite the progress of the search, O'Brien remains on paid administrative leave due to a pending investigation and the lack of a "light duty clause" for police officers.

"The department really needs a captain," Neffinger said, adding that the U.S. Attorney's Office has yet to comment on or notify the town regarding the situation.
