HAMPDEN For the first time, the Hampden Free Public Library has been selected as the site of the annual Library Legislative Breakfast.

The continental-style breakfast will take place on March 7 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the library, located at 625 Main St. Guest speakers will include state Sen. Gale Candaras, and state Reps. Mary Rogeness and Angelo Puppolo. Representatives the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and other regional library service organizations will also be on hand to discuss advocating for public libraries in the legislature.

Parking will be available on the street, or in the lot of the Federated Community Church. The public is invited. For more information and reservations call 566-3047.

"This year's legislative theme, 'strong libraries are essential to education and lifelong learning, to economic development, to strong communities and to a strong democracy' has a very significant meaning to our library," Raymond A. Andree, trustee for the Hampden Free Public Library said. "We are honored to host this important event for our area on behalf of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC), Western Massachusetts Regional Library System (WMRLS) and Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing (C/W Mars)."

The Hampden Free Public Library drew national attention in 2005 when the town voted not to budget monies for it services for Fiscal Year 2006 and the library closed on July 1. Through the efforts of the Friends of the Hampden Free Public Library, services such as a book swap and children's programming continued during the closure, and the Friends successfully got the library budget reinstated for the next fiscal year. The Hampden Library reopened on July 1, 2006.
