|I am doing my best to keep my street and neighborhood free of litter, but that's almost impossible when the alleged newspaper of record The Republican condones and authorizes its circulation peddlers to throw its so-called Extra onto the driveways and sidewalks of city homes throughout the city. You may appear to be superficially correct and within the law but litter is litter and there are city ordinances and regulations which are in place to prevent this kind of unbecoming marketing from happening.|
Myself, along with my neighbors, would appreciate it very much if you could advise your Extra distributor to cease and desist from dropping off, throwing, this unsightly newspaper Extra on my driveway and property. This will avoid any possible future litigation which might in some way embarrass your paper, which according to the Audit Bureau of Circulation has been losing circulation readership over the past several years. If this unsightly merchandising practice should continue, I will bring it to the attention of the local television media. Words are nice but performance is better. Let's all work together to make Springfield not only downtown but its neighborhoods a cleaner and more attractive environment.
S. I. Newhouse had a reputation for being a lot more interested in the bottom line advertising lineage than good will and community service. As a matter of fact he thought that serious investigative journalism, new reporting was secondary. It has been said that he would step over a dollar to pick up a dime. That's not the kind of image and reputation a monopoly newspaper of record wants to have if it intends to increase its circulation and readership.
