Transparency

Jan. 23, 2014
The last mayor of Chicopee stressed transparency in government to the residents. According to Webster-Merriam, transparency is a picture (as on film) viewed by light shining through it or by projection, and the quality or state of being transparent It's becoming easier and easier to see through the transparent former mayor.

In Chicopee, the mayor is the highest-ranking official and although not necessarily directly involved, that office is responsible for the actions of all others under the mayor’s jurisdiction. To play upon a well-worn phrase, the buck stops there.

Here are just a few of the former mayor’s legacy of transparencies.

First, there was the unauthorized tape recording of Chicopee City Council chamber pre-council meeting conversations. Next, the forged signatures on a petition drive to place a four-year term for mayor on the Chicopee ballot. And now, deletion of city e-mail and possibly other missing written communications; if nothing to hide, why delete and make the incoming administration’s job more difficult than it needs to be?

All of these (and more) occurred on his watch.

Last November the voters of Chicopee finally had enough. But even after leaving office, the beat goes on. When will it all end? Stay tuned, Chicopee.
