Agawam's Bonavita sets Elms College field hockey saves record

CHICOPEE — Elms College field hockey's senior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita of Agawam amassed 16 saves and became the program's all-time saves leader, surpassing Tammy Landon's '97 previous best mark of 752 in a 5-0 loss to Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Oct. 27.

Bonavita now has 768 saves in her standout career.

Bonavita tied the record on Oct. 21, making seven saves as the Blazers bested Regis College, 3-1 on Oct. 23.

Shea runs to honor roll spot

BUZZARDS BAY — Westfield State University's (WSU) Tim Shea, of West Springfield posted a fifth place individual finish for the Owls at Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Cross Country Championships with time of 26:44.05 over 8K course, earning him a spot on the MASCAC weekly honor roll.

Ferrari honored by MASCAC

BUZZARDS BAY — Westfield's Jennifer Ferrari, a junior forward for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts women's soccer team, was named to the MASCAC weekly honor roll after she collected three goals and an assist for seven points in a 2-1 week for the Trailblazers, including two tallies in their 3-2 double overtime setback to Worcester State.

Big game garners Bengle award

BUZZARDS BAY — Freshman forward Kevin Bengle of West Springfield tallied a goal and an assist to lead the WSU men's soccer team to a 2-0 men's soccer victory over Lasell College on Oct. 24.

Bengle scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute on a breakaway.

Exactly a minute later, Westfield added an insurance goal when junior Matt O'Neill of Southwick scored on a header from close range with an assist by Bengle.

The effort earned Bengle a spot on the MASCAC men's soccer weekly honor roll.

Bombers win two of three

WESTFIELD — The Westfield High School girls' volleyball team took two out of three games last week as their strong season continues.

Westfield first defeated West Springfield 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22) behind Tracy Midwood's 16 assists on Oct. 22.

Millwood also contributed seven service points, including an ace, while Abby Hart recorded five kills, three aces and two blocks. Kate Menard also had five kills to go along with five assists, three digs, two aces in a strong overall performance.

Rudi Spano had 13 assists, five kills and a pair of aces to lead the Terriers. Lilia Mosijchok led the team with 17 digs and Nicki Longey recorded seven kills, three aces and eight digs.

On Oct. 25, Westfield swept Pittsfield 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-19), led by Ellen Ferst's 16 service points and five aces.

Maddy Atkosaitis recorded five blocks and seven service points, while Midwood added 17 assists, two kills and two digs for the Bombers.

The next day, the Bombers fell to Minnechaug in three sets. Mary Calabrese has 10 kills and an ace, while Hart contributed six blocks, five kills and an ace.

Hall pots two on Senior Day

WESTFIELD — Liz Hall celebrated WSU's Senior Day in style by scoring two first-half goals as the Owls field hockey team survived a scare from Salem State University to post a 5-4 victory on Oct. 27.

Pickett, Martin lead Elms

LEICESTER — Sophomore middle hitter JC Pickett of Chicopee led the Elms College women's volleyball team with a match-high 13 kills to go along with two service aces and 11 digs as the Blazers swept Becker College 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-20) on Oct. 27. Junior outside hitter Christina Martin of Chicopee sparked the defensive effort with 11 digs.

On Oct. 24, Martin notched a team-high four kills, but Southern Vermont College swept the Blazers 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-14). Pickett added three kills and team-best 10 digs.

Springfield College swim teams defeat Holy Cross

SPRINGFIELD — Holyoke's Phillip Murphy finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:25.99 the as the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team defeated visiting Holy Cross, 152-146, on Oct. 27.

Murphy and Chicopee's Tim Ramos finished in 5:03.67 and 5:07.99, respectively, to take first and second in the 500-yard freestyle.

On the women's side, Westfield's Kelsey Poole was part of the 400-yard medley relay team that placed first with a time 4:07.77 as the Pride won 173.5 - 121.5.

Gallo's hat trick powers Pride

SPRINGFIELD — Kelly Gallo registered a hat trick to power the Springfield College field hockey team to a 8-2 win over Salem State in the Pride's non-conference finale on Oct. 23.

Blazers, Becker settle for tie

CHICOPEE — Elms College freshman midfielder Melissa Welch of Westfield assisted on a pair of first half goals to help seal a 2-2 double overtime draw for the Blazers in an Oct. 25 women's soccer game against Becker College.

Fitzsimmons helps AIC past Adelphi

SPRINGFIELD — The 10th-ranked American International College (AIC) women's soccer team earned a 2-0 Northeast-10 victory over Adelphi University on Oct. 24.

AIC earned a 1-0 in the first half when junior back Allie Fitzsimmons of West Springfield buried a shot from 15 yards out.
