Gervais breaks record as WSU takes indoor track championship

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Targie Gervais of Springfield, Mass., set a new record in taking the 55 meters (7.20) for the Westfield State University (WSU) women's indoor track and field team, which posted a 36-point victory over runner-up and three-time defending champion Worcester State at the 2013 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships. The competition took place at Southern Maine's Costello Athletic Fieldhouse Complex as part of the New England Alliance Championships.

WSU posted a team score of 228 points on the day to outdistance Worcester State's total of 192 points.

Jenn Holley of Ludlow, Mass., was part of a team that took top honors in the 4x800 meter relay for the Owls in a conference record time of 9:57.23.

Alexandria McMahon of East Longmeadow, Mass., captured an individual title in the high jump (1.52 meters/4-11.75) for Worcester State.

Gervais and McMahon both earned spots on the MASCAC weekly honor roll for their efforts.

Locals break school records



WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – Senior Emalee Furtek of Ludlow, Mass., shattered a school record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:35.56 in the preliminaries of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships as the Elms College women's swimming and diving team notched 239 points and placed 15th out of 21 teams.

Furtek also narrowly missed registering a school record in the 50-yard butterfly, notching an 11th place time of 28.53.

On the men's side, freshman James Grippo of Longmeadow, Mass., set a record in the 200-yard backstroke to 2:04.81 and finished ninth in the race and clocked a new school record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:31.92 which bested the previous record by six seconds and placed fourth overall as the Blazers finished in sixth place in the field of 11 teams with a total of 310.5 points.

Grippo was also part of a team that clocked a new school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay and a team that glided to a third place mark in the 200-yard medley relay with a school record time of 1:39.20 and a 400-yard medley relay team that set a new school record of 3:41.45 and finished third.

Ferrentino makes honor roll



SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Krista Ferrentino of East Longmeadow earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Women's Basketball Honor Roll for her performances in two games last week.

Ferrentino averaged a double-double with 14 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. She leads the team in scoring and is second in rebounding with 12 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

She recorded 14 points with nine boards as the American International College women's basketball team dropped a tightly contested 68-59 Northeast-10 contest at Adelphi University on Feb. 10 and also had 14 points with a game-high 16 boards, three assists and two steals as the Yellow Jackets dropped a heartbreaker in double-overtime to visiting Pace University on Feb. 6.

Williamson named to MASCAC honor roll



BUZZARDS BAY – Ludlow's Jenna Williamson, a junior guard for the Bridgewater State University women's basketball team, scored 19 points, including three three-pointers, and collected four steals in the Bears' 74-63 victory over Saint Joseph's (Maine) to earn a spot on the MASCAC weekly honor roll.

Berthiaume paces Springfield past No. 2 WPI



SPRINGFIELD – Springfield's Alex Berthiaume paced Springfield College with 20 points as the pride men's basketball team knocked off WPI, the nation's second-ranked team 66-60 on Feb. 10.

Springfield has now beaten three teams this year who at one point were ranked in the top five in the D3hoops.com national poll, with earlier victories over MIT and Amherst.
