Kronlund leads Elms College at invitational

CHICOPEE — Elms College senior men’s cross country runner Benjamin Kronlund of Longmeadow was the top individual finisher for the Elms College men’s cross country team in the James Earley Invitational hosted by Westfield State University at Stanley Park on Oct. 8.

Kronlund clocked a time of 36:17 to lead the Blazers.

Meanwhile, freshman Jessie Murray (38:39) and sophomore John Southworth, both of Springfield, each had strong finishes for the Blazers in the men’s eight-kilometer race.

Freshman Meghan Sullivan of Springfield finished with a time of 25:37 for the women’s team. She was followed by Chicopee’s Jennifer Cicero (26:26), Springfield’s Kerry Ashe (26:28), Agawam’s Gabrielle Calvanese (28:50), and Holyoke’s Stephanie Konstantinidis (31:55).

Gorneault’s hat trick lifts Elms

CHICOPEE — Elms College sophomore midfielder Gianna Gorneault of Springfield scored three goals to help pace the Blazers to a convincing 6-1 victory over Regis College on Oct. 8. East Longmeadow’s Christina Goodchild and Chicopee’s Sevonnah LaRochelle tallied assists in the win.

Gorneault followed up that effort by netting two goals to help the Blazers secure a 4-0 victory over Southern Vermont College on Oct. 12.

Mercadante shines in loss

WESTFIELD — Wilbraham’s Michael Mercadante rushed 26 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns, but Westfield State University came up short in a 36-34 double-overtime loss to Maine Maritime.

Ziggy scores, but Elms falls

CHICOPEE — Elms College sophomore forward Ziggy Jonathan of Springfield scored a goal, but Southern Vermont College beat the Blazers 4-1 on Oct. 8.

Parsons named to men’s soccer honor roll

BUZZARD’S BAY — Bridgewater State’s Joe Parsons of Springfield was named to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer honor roll on Oct. 9.

The junior goalkeeper stopped 12 of 13 shots and posted 0.50 GAA in a 1-1 week for Bears, including five saves in a 2-0 victory over Salem State to go with seven stops in a 1-0 setback at Curry.

Hughes named to All-CCC team

SPRINGFIELD — Senior Caitlin Hughes of Springfield earned All-Commonwealth Coast Conference Singles Second Team honors on Oct. 11.
