LONGMEADOW – On Feb. 1, Longmeadow High School field hockey coach Ann Simons received the Massachusetts Women in Athletics Distinguished Service Award at Faneuil Hall in Boston.
This award is given annually by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to recognize women who have worked with distinction on behalf of girls' sports in their communities.
In order to be considered for this award the individual must be nominated, and recommendations must be submitted to support the candidate's qualifications.
The recipient must be a woman who has provided long-term service to the community in supports of girls' sports, made a significant impact on the lives of young girls in the community and served as a positive role model for girls.
Players, parents, coaches, officials and administrators submitted letters of recommendations in support of Simmons' candidacy.
Simmons has coached the Longmeadow field hockey team for 33 years and during her tenure, she has positively influenced and impacted so many people, especially girls to be the best that they can be, both on and off the field while leading the Lancers to several Western Massachusetts sectional and state tournaments.
She has empowered her players to be positive leaders and responsible individuals that give back to the community whether in the form of volunteering, fundraising or hosting events to bring awareness to a cause.
Simons has also been a positive role model that girls aspire to as seen in the testimonies of past players.
