Medina named Scholar All-American

July 18, 2013
SPRINGFIELD – Western New England University's Anthony Medina of Springfield is a 2012-13 Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA). To be named an NWCA Scholar All-American, a student-athlete must meet certain grade-point average and wrestling performance thresholds during the season.

The two-time team captain was one of just 107 recipients from a pool of approximately 2,400 NCAA Division III wrestlers who were eligible for the award.

This March, Medina completed his senior season with the Golden Bears majoring in sustainability, with a business emphasis, and competing in the 149-pound weight class. He posted a 20-7 record for a .773 winning percentage that ranked second on the squad, and he was the third runner-up at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships.

Medina concludes his Golden Bears career as one of the best wrestlers in program history, recording more victories than other school standouts Olympian Rodney Smith and four-time All-American Gary Solomon. Medina’s other accomplishments included All-New England Wrestling Association, four-year NCAA regional qualifier, the 2010 Joe Leto Award for outstanding team effort as a freshman and twice was named WNE most outstanding player.
