Miller earns Player of the Week honors, reaches milestone

BUZZARDS BAY – Kayley Miller, a senior forward for the Westfield State University (WSU) women's soccer team from Ludlow, tallied two goals in a 2-0 week for Owls, including a overtime game-winner in a 1-0 extra-session triumph over Worcester State to garner Massachusetts State College Athletic Association Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors, it was announced on Sept. 30.

Against Worcester state, teammate and fellow Ludlow native Brittanie McGregor heel flicked the ball to Miller, who had a step on the defender inside the box. Miller then beat the Lancer goalie with a shot to the far post in the 99th minute and the Owls stormed the field in front of a large crowd of nearly 250 spectators.

In adition to that game-winner, Miller also scored a goal in a 3-0 victory over Smith College.

Miller also scored both goals and her 100th career point to power the undefeated Westfield State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Trinity College on Oct. 3.

Butcher named Defensive Player of the Week by NEC, ECAC

SOMERSET, N.J. – Brianna Butcher of East Longmeadow, Mass., earned her second straight Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week accolade after recording her fourth and fifth shutouts of the season for St. Francis University.

Days later, Butcher picked up the same honor from the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

The senior has yet to surrender a goal in conference play. She made 14 saves in the Red Flash's 1-0 double-overtime win over Sacred Heart on Sept. 30 and nearly doubled her previous career high. She also posted four saves in a 3-0 win at Bryant.

Minnechaug to host Spike it for Life event

WILBRAHAM – The Minnechaug girls' volleyball team is looking to pack the stands in a sea of pink to show their support of "Spike It For Life," a project to raise cancer awareness and funds for cancer research. This is a big match for the Falcon girls as they face the Longmeadow Lancers. The teams are hosting the event together and all proceeds from admissions and raffles will be donated to support cancer research.

Wear pink to the game to show your support. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The game will be in the Minnechaug gym on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m.

Riopelle sets record for all-time wins in HCC rout of Dean

HOLYOKE – Holyoke Community College (HCC) women's soccer team goalkeeper Malynda Riopelle of Springfield recorded her 19th career win, putting her all by herself atop the all-time HCC list as the Lady Cougars defeated Dean College 6-0 at home on Sept. 29. She also tied a program record with 13 career shutouts.

Yam honored by Skidmore College Athletic Department

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College Athletics Department inducted 96 student-athletes into the college's Thoroughbred Honor Society in a Sept. 24 ceremony on campus, including Kelsey Yam, the daughter of Richard and Vanessa Yam of Longmeadow, Mass.

Skidmore's Thoroughbred Honor Society recognizes varsity student-athletes who have achieved a grade point average of 3.67 or higher during the previous semester. Among the group recognized this fall were three two-sport athletes and 12 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA.
