New faces join Rock Cats after road trip

June 19, 2013
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The New Britain Rock Cats made a lot of noise this past week, with the majority of it taking place off the field.

The Rock Cats' parent club, the Minnesota Twins, promoted three promising players to Connecticut from their Fort Myers, Fla., club in the Single-A Florida State League.

After Manager Jeff Smith's squad returned on June 10 from a distant but very successful road trip to Richmond, Va., and Bowie, Md., they were greeted by the arrival of a trio of highly-touted prospects – third baseman Miguel Sano, second baseman Eddie Rosario, and outfielder Angel Morales.

Sano, ranked by Baseball America (BA) as the No. 1 prospect in the entire Minnesota organization, is the jewel of the system. Rosario is a highly talented player who BA ranks as Twins No. 8 prospect, and Morales is a multiple tool player with power.

Sano was a highly coveted free agent from the Dominican Republic who signed with the Twins in 2009 and was one of the two players featured in the recently released and highly acclaimed baseball documentary "Ballplayer – Pelotero."

The 6-foot-3, 247-pound slugger has been an offensive monster in his short minor league career – mashing 71 homeruns in just over three seasons.

Rosario is a smooth-fielding infielder who can also hold his own with the bat. He was promoted to New Britain after batting .329 in 52 games in Fort Myers and should provide some pop from the left side for the Rock Cats.

Morales is a promising player who appeared briefly in the Hardware City during the Rock Cats' 2009 playoff run and did well. He will likely nail down a starting outfield job.

As for the on-field developments, this past week was a bit of a washout with two mid-week games postponed against Altoona because of wet conditions. Before taking on Altoona, the Cats finished up the tail end of a road trip that saw them play three against Richmond and three against Bowie – San Francisco Giants and Baltimore Orioles affiliates. The team finished the trip with a 4-2 record.
