Power Lifting Competition

Lexi Zippin, a junior at Longmeadow High School, recently returned from an AAU International Power Lifting competition in Laughlin, Nevada. Lexi competed in the bench press, the squat lift and the dead lift events. She won a world medal for power lifting (bench press and dead lift) and another world medal for the single lift (squat lift). She set personal bests in two of the events and narrowly missed setting a personal best in the third event. Lexi started power lifting in September 2007. In August 2008, she won a gold medal at the Junior Olympics in Detroit and she set a world record in the dead lift for her age and weight category by lifting 264.6 pounds at that event. Her next major international event will take place at the end of May in Virginia. At the event in Nevada, there were teams and individuals from Slovakia, Mexico, Brazil and France, as well as a new power lifting team from Springfield College made up of graduate students. Lexi is currently a member of the track team at Longmeadow H.S. where she is being trained to compete in the shot-put event for the high school.
