Russell named NECC Pitcher of the Week, Bay Path wins lacrosse opener
|ATTLEBORO – Elms College men's baseball senior pitcher John Russell of Springfield was named New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Pitcher of the Week for baseball as announced by the league on April 8.|
Russell was named NECC Pitcher of the Week for the first this season. Russell was terrific on the hill in the first game of a double-header against NECC rival Newbury College, tossing a complete game over seven innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out three batters to earn the win highlighted by a 1-2-3 fifth frame. The Blazers swept the Nighthawks with wins of 4-1, 13-3 and 10-5 during the weekend.
Bay Path lacrosse wins inaugural home opener
LONGMEADOW – Bay Path College hosted Mitchell College in an exhibition contest for their inaugural women's lacrosse home opener, easily cruising past the Mariners 15-5 on April 3. Junior midfielder Jillian O'Melia of East Longmeadow topped all players with nine points notching the game high six goals for the Wildcats.
Longmeadow's Shelby Regan netted three goals and added an assist.
Weldon earns third win of the season for Blazers
HOLYOKE – Elms College pitcher Thomas Weldon of Springfield fired three strikeouts and collected his third win of the season by tossing 7.1 innings allowing four runs on six hits on the hill to help the Blazers baseball team post a 10-5 victory over Newbury College on April 7.
Geoffrey Frost of Ludlow contributed an RBI double to the winning effort.
Moriarty aids WIT in regular season ending sweep
BOSTON – Senior Tyler Moriarty of Wilbraham had 56 assists in the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team's 3-2 win over Lasell College and 30 assists in a 3-0 sweep of Johnson & Wales in a tri-meet to finish off the regular season.
Dorsey nets game-winner
SPRINGFIELD – Wilbraham's Michelle Dorsey scored a free-position goal with 4.7 seconds remaining to lift the Springfield College women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over Babson College in a rematch of last year's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on April 6.
She finished the game with a goal and an assist.
Footit wins steeplechase
SPRINGFIELD – Wilbraham's Elizabeth Footit won the 3000-meter steeplechase in 12:48.35 to help the Springfield College women's track and field team to a second-place finish at an April 6 tri-meet.
Middlebury came away victorious by scoring 143 points, followed by the Pride with 134, and Bowdoin with 108.
Stack leads Owls with seven points
WESTFIELD – Senior Maura Stack scored a game-high seven points (four goals, three assists) to lead Westfield State University (WSU) to a 16-6 victory over Fitchburg State University in women's lacrosse on April 6.
Breton tosses no-hitter for WNE
DUDLEY – Sophomore right-hander Trevor Breton of Enfield, Conn., threw a no-hitter in the first game of the Western New England University (WNE) baseball team's doubleheader sweep of Nichols College on April 6.
Breton threw 86 pitches to earn the complete-game win (2-1), striking out nine and walking two as he faced just one over the minimum of 21 batters. He became the first WNE hurler to toss a no-hitter since 2005.
Elms golf places fourth at Rhode Island Invitational
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Anthony Roberts of Ludlow, Mass., carded a round of 81 to finish with a total score of 167 as the Elms College men's golf team placed fourth out of 15 teams at the Rhode Island College Invitational on April 6.
Junior Tyler Cudnik of Hampden, Mass., shot a 91 on day two and 172 over the two days, while senior Phil Rurak of Wilbraham notched a second round of 97 to finish with a 183 overall score.
Pereira places fourth overall at URI Invitational
KINGSTON, R.I. – American International College senior Nate Pereira of Ludlow, Mass., tied for fourth overall after having the lead after round one with a 12-over par 154 (73-81) as Yellow Jackets placed eighth at the University of Rhode Island Invitational.
Junior Tommy LeBlanc of Springfield, Mass., tied for 51st with a 173 (92-81).
Welsh records career-high 64 assists
CHICOPEE – Elms College junior setter Kevin Welsh of Wilbraham dished out a collegiate-career high 64 assists and a match-best 18 digs to help propel the Blazers to a 3-2 (27-29, 25-21, 25-14, 17-25, 15-11) men's volleyball win over Southern Vermont College on April 3.
Welsh also notched 38 assists in a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22) loss to Daniel Webster on April 6.
Elms softball sweeps by tops Anna Maria
CHICOPEE – Elms College sophomore catcher Gianna Gonyea of East Longmeadow was 3-for-4 with five RBI to help drive the Blazers to an 11-3 win over Anna Maria College on April 2.
Gonyea also went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in a 6-3 loss in the first game of a doubleheader with Daniel Webster College on April 7. The Blazers won game two 7-1.
Nassar helps WNE tennis to win
SPRINGFIELD – Longmeadow's Peter Nassar teamed with John Mindek as the third doubles pair and defeated Curry College's Eric Hellberg and Lucas Donaway 8-3 as the WNE men's tennis team took a 9-0 over Curry on April 2.
Reardon, WNE top Nichols
DUDLEY – Senior James Reardon scored a goal and assisted another to help pace a balance WNE men's lacrosse scoring attack in an 18-8 victory at Nichols College on April 2.
Elms volleyball clinic
CHICOPEE – The Elms College men's and women's volleyball teams will host their spring clinics at the Maguire Center on the campus of Elms College on April 14, April 20 and May 4.
Each session runs from 9:45 a.m. to noon and costs $20 per participant. Boys and girls ages 14 and older are welcome and adult players are welcome to attend as well.

Wilbraham baseball tryouts
WILBRAHAM – Mickey Mantle, Junior and Senior Legion Baseball tryouts for players 14 through 19 years old will take place on April 20 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., and April 21 from noon to 2 p.m. at Minnechaug Regional High School.
