Schechtman places third overall at state gymnastics meet

STERLING – Alex Schechtman of Longmeadow, a 13-year-old member of the Level 8 men's gymnastics team at Daggett Gymnastics in Agawam, took third place in his level and age group with an all-around score of 72.7000 at the USA Gymnastics-sanctioned Massachusetts Men's Gymnastics State Meet at Sterling Academy of Gymnastics on March 23 and 24.

In addition to his all-around ranking, Alex placed first on rings with a score of 12.500, second on parallel bars and high bar, with scores of 12.800 and 12.100 respectively, and third on pommel horse with a score of 11.300.

Ahmed named Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week



WORCESTER – Holy Cross junior infielder/pitcher Mike Ahmed of East Longmeadow was named Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week for helping lead the Crusaders to six wins during the week of April 15 to 21. The Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year earns the award for the first time this season and second time in his career.

In a week where Holy Cross outscored its opponents 27-9, Ahmed led the Crusaders with a .533 batting average as he went 8-for-15 with two doubles, eight runs scored and one RBI. In helping Holy Cross to a four-game sweep over Lehigh this past weekend, Ahmed went 7-for-12 with six runs, two walks and a pair of stolen bases. The junior also pitched the series finale versus the Mountain Hawks and picked up his third victory of the season on the mound. He tossed six scoreless frames and allowed five hits and one walk, while fanning a pair.

For the season, Ahmed is batting .270 with 30 hits, 26 runs, two doubles and a pair of homers to go along with 23 RBIs. He also has set a career high with 10 stolen bases this year, which ranks second on the team. As a pitcher, Ahmed holds a 3-3 record with a 3.58 ERA and one save. He has pitched 27.2 innings and allowed 11 earned runs on 35 hits, while striking out a career-best 26 batters.

Waslik named to NFHCA All-Academic team



WILBRAHAM – Longmeadow's Maria Waslik was one of three Wilbraham & Monson Academy field hockey players to be selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic Team.

In order to be nominated a player must have a unweighted GPA of 3.5 (4.0 scale) or better in the first marking period.

Waslik, a member of the class of 2013, has enrolled into Vassar College.

Cudnik, Rurak help Elms to fifth place finish



CRANSTON, R.I. – The Elms College golf team earned a two-day score of 647 and a fifth place finish in the Wildcats Spring Invitational hosted by Johnson & Wales University on April 20 and 21.

Junior Tyler Cudnik of Hampden shot a second-day round of 79 and finished the event with a combined score of 164 and senior Phil Rurak of Wilbraham shot a round of 85 and collected a two-day total of 168.

Wilbraham's Steven Langlois shot a second-round 82 to finish with a combined score of 172 as Western New England University (WNE) finished fourth overall.

Cudnik also had a round of 83 at the Western New England University Invitational on April 18.

O'Melia's four goals pace Bay Path lacrosse to milestone



BOSTON – East Longmeadow's Jillian O'Melia led the Bay Path College women's lacrosse team with four goals, five draw controls, four ground balls and a caused turnover as the Wildcats recorded new record for goals in a game during the team's inaugural season in a 22-8 loss to Wheelock College on April 20.

Longmeadow's Shelby Regan also netted a goal.

The eight goals broke the record set one game earlier when Bay path scored six times in a 23-6 loss to Elms College on April 17. O'Melia scored four goals, picked up three ground balls and won six draw controls, while Regan added a goal.

Reardon nets two in WNE victory



MILTON – Senior James Reardon of Longmeadow netted two goals to help the Western New England University to a 16-7 victory at Curry College on April 20.

Nassar contributes to win in long day of tennis



EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Longmeadow's Peter Nassar was part of the third doubles team that earned an 8-0 sweep Western New England completed a long day of men; s tennis action – about 5-and-a-half hours from start to finish – by cruising past Salve Regina, 8-1, as rain forced the match from an outdoor site in Newport, R.I. to an indoor venue in East Providence, R.I.

Stack records seven points in losing effort



WESTFIELD – Wilbraham's Maura Stack scored four goals and assisted three others and grabbed three ground balls, but Western Connecticut clipped the Westfield State University women's lacrosse team 19-17 on April 18.
