Starke, Elms relay set new school record

BOSTON – Aaron Starke of Chicopee was part of the Elms College men's swimming and diving team's 200-yard medley relay team that set a new school record (1:40.60) as the Blazers took second at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championships on Dec. 2.

Senior Mark Gehring of West Springfield finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:38.53.

Medina wins 149-pound weight class at Ted Reece Invite

GORHAM, Maine – Senior tri-captain and Springfield native Anthony Medina was leading University of Southern Maine's (USM) Peter Gilman in the 149-pound class first-place match before he won by disqualification as the Western New England University (WNE) wrestling squad scored 80.5 points Saturday to place third at the nine-team Ted Reese Invitational hosted by USM on Dec. 2.

He defeated Nicholas Perez of Springfield Technical Community College by a 5-0 decision in the semifinals as well.

Murphy, Poole compete at Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – Holyoke's Phillip Murphy swam a 17:30.93 in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the Ithaca Invitational on Sunday as the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team finished fourth among 11 teams competing on Dec. 2.

On the women's side, Westfield's Kelsey Poole posted a 2:14.29 in the 200-yard backstroke as the Pride finished fifth.

Berthiaume continues to pace Springfield men's hoop

SPRINGFIELD – Springfield College senior guard Alex Berthiaume had 20 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead Springfield College to a big 70-64 victory over sixth-ranked Amherst College in second-night action of the 12th Annual Pioneer Valley Hoop Classic on Dec. 1.

Berthiaume, a Springfield native, also led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting and the Springfield College men's basketball team buckled down on defense in the second half to hold on for a 75-72 win at Keene State College on Nov. 27.

Felix asserts herself in the paint

WESTFIELD – Sophomore center Gabby Felix of Springfield led all scorers with 13 points before fouling out of the contest with three minutes remaining as the Westfield State University (WSU) women's basketball team lost to Suffolk University 49-41 on Dec. 1.

Felix also posted game highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Owls as the WSU women's basketball team beat Emerson College 59-52 on Nov. 27.
