Q: Can you give us a recap of the first month of the season?
Dubnyk: I think the start went well. We had a few things to work out the first few games of the season. Our PK (penalty-kill) got off to a little bit of a rough start, but we've cleaned that up. We are working hard now, and things seem to be coming together. It's early and we haven't played too many games yet, but I think the start is good, and we realize that we have a really good group of guys in here and a really good team when we play as well as we can. It's exciting moving forward and to have more games coming up.
Q: The penalty-kill has been working at a 97% clip over the past five games after starting the season at 69% over the first four. What has changed here?
Dubnyk: I think it was just a few things we needed to work on. It's a new group of guys who weren't used to working with each other. We just had to fix a couple of things. They were small problems. We are trying to be more aggressive now which I think helps, and we are getting a couple of bounces. It didn't seem like we could buy a bounce at the start which never helps. We are feeling comfortable now, and all confident about it. It's going well, and I'm sure it will keep going well.
Q: How has the workload been on your body? Are you okay with the amount of time you are playing right now?
Dubnyk:: I'm fine with it. That is what I was looking forward to and wanted. I love playing games. I love playing in all of the games. The schedule isn't too hectic just yet. We have a couple games per weekend, so I'm definitely not complaining. I'm loving it, and definitely looking forward to keep going.
Q: You just got a new (goalie) mask today. Can you walk us through the design and the significance of the changes?
Dubnyk: Well I get a new mask every year. The painter that I go to is Ray Bishop and he is pretty creative, so I usually give him free reign to do what he likes to do. I give him an idea or two, but usually let him go with it. It is usually a bit of a surprise as to what shows up each year, but I've liked them so far.
Q: Can you explain the mask a little bit?
Dubnyk: There are just a couple of things I went with. There is a pond hockey theme on the sides. Growing up I had a rink in my backyard so I thought it would be good thing to put on there. It was a big part of my childhood growing up. As for as the other themes, I just let him (Ray Bishop) go with it. I have "Dubey" on the chin, and the Oilers logo (on top). The chin was my idea, but everything else I let him go with. It looks like he did a pretty good job. On the back I have the Canadian map, "Welcome to Oil Country" which is one of the Oilers slogans. I have a giraffe which was my nickname in juniors, maybe because I am tall and have a long neck, and I have the pink breast cancer ribbon for my mom who is a breast cancer survivor.
