Ben Guite
SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield Falcons, proud members of the American Hockey League, announced today that forward Ben Guite has been named team captain of the Falcons for the 2010-11 season. The Falcons also announced that defenseman Nate Guenin and center Michael Blunden have been named assistant captains.
Guite is in his 11th professional season and was signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets this past summer as a free agent. The Montreal, Quebec native has registered 19-26-45 and 97 penalty minutes in 175 career NHL games with Boston, Colorado and Nashville. He set career highs with 11-11-22, 47 penalty minutes and was plus-1 in 79 games with the Avalanche in 2007-08.
In 499 career AHL games with Springfield, Bridgeport, Cincinnati, Providence, Albany and Milwaukee, he has registered 82-139-221, 447 penalty minutes and a plus-8 cumulative plus/minus rating. Guenin was also signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets this past summer as a free agent and has played for both Springfield and Columbus this year. Guenin, 27, has played in eight games for the Falcons this year, while also appearing in three contests with the Blue Jackets.
Last season, he appeared in two games with the Pittsburgh Penguins and combined to tally 5-13-18, 98 penalty minutes and was plus-11 in 68 AHL games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Peoria Rivermen, including 2-11-13, 35 penalty minutes and plus-14 in 27 games after joining Peoria.
Blunden is in his fifth professional season and split last year between Syracuse and Columbus. Chicago's second pick, 43rd overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft, Blunden was acquired by the Blue Jackets from Chicago in exchange for Adam Pineault on Jan. 10, 2009.
Then on Nov. 11, the Columbus Blue Jackets placed left wing Kristian Huselius on injured reserve, retroactive to Oct. 23 and added Blunden to the roster on emergency recall from Springfield.
Also that day, the Blue Jackets acquired left wing Dane Byers from the New York Rangers in exchange for Falcons center Chad Kolarik. Byers was assigned to the Springfield Falcons, Columbus' American Hockey League affiliate.
Byers, 24, has collected three goals and six assists for nine points and 25 penalty minutes in 16 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers' AHL affiliate. The Rangers' fourth pick in the 2004 Entry Draft ranked second on the club in points and was third in assists.
