Acosta leads Blazers men's volleyball

CHICOPEE — Elms College senior outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta of Holyoke smashed a match-high eight kills and recorded a .615 hitting percentage as the Blazers men’s volleyball team swept Lesley University, 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-21) on Feb. 2.

He followed that up with an 11-kill effort as the Blazers topped Newbury College 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23) and Mount Ida College 3-0 (25-6, 25-11, 25-23) on Feb. 4

Felix strong against Bridgewater State

WESTFIELD — The Westfield State University (WSU) women’s basketball teams’ freshman center Gabby Felix of Springfield had 14 points and seven rebounds, but Bridgewater State University earned a 72-67 victory over the Owls on Feb. 4.

Girard wins two for WSU

BIDDEFORD, Maine — Jonathan Girard of West Springfield had two wins in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.59), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:48.40) as the WSU men’s swimming and diving team earned a 123.5-95.5 win over the University of New England on Feb. 4. Mark Gehring, also of West Springfield, and Chicopee’s Aaron Starke were part of the 200-yard medley relay squad that won the event with a time of 1:48.12.

Brown honored by MASCAC

BUZZARDS BAY — Jamal Brown, a senior forward for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts from Springfield, was named to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference honor roll on Feb. 5. Brown averaged 18 points and seven rebounds in an 0-2 week for Trailblazers, including 27 points and eight boards in a 87-78 loss to Salem State. He shot 64 percent (14-22) from the field for the week.

Cooper strong on the boards

SPRINGFIELD — Brennan Cooper of Springfield scored six points while pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds, but the American International College men’s basketball team dropped a tightly contested contest 63-55 to Adelphi University on Feb. 4.

SC women win own invitational

SPRINGFIELD — Jenn Kapinos of Agawam took first in the 800 meter run finishing in 2:25.26 as the Springfield College women’s track & field team won its own Springfield February Track & Field Meet on Feb. 4
