Alrutz wins two figure skating gold medals at State Games of America

Oct. 2, 2013
HERSHEY, Pa. – Twelve-year-old Sally Alrutz of Springfield won two gold medals in figure skating representing Massachusetts at the 2013 State Games of America (SGA).

The SGA is a biennial Olympic-style event featuring competition between State Games medal winners (gold, silver, bronze) from across the nation. Medal winners from State Games programs in 2011 and 2012, as well as medal winners from the 2011 SGA in San Diego, Calif. were eligible to compete in the Hershey 2013 State Games.

This year marked the eighth year for the SGA, which returned to the east coast for its second time in the event’s history.

Alrutz began figure skating when she was 4. In February 2011, she won a gold medal in figure skating at the Bay State Games hosted at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.

This achievement qualified her, along with the other silver and bronze medal winners, to represent Massachusetts at the 2011 SGA in San Diego, Calif.

Her outstanding performance earned her a gold medal in her artistic event and a silver medal in her showcase competition.

In February 2013, Alrutz competed for one of the top three spots at the Bay State Games for the chance to compete in the 2013 SGA. Her second place finish, a silver medal, in the freestyle program earned her the right to return to the SGA for a second time.

As the torch was extinguished at the close of the 2013 SGA on Aug. 4, Alrutz had earned two gold medals in the freestyle and showcase programs.

Alrutz will attend the Williston Northampton School. While attending Williston, she will continue to figure skate under the direction of her coaches Karla Schallehn in Albany, N.Y. and Jessica Anastasio at the International Skating Center of Connecticut in Simsbury, Conn.

She is also a member of the Charter Oak Figure Skating Club.

The 2015 SGA will take place in Lincoln, Neb.
