GREATER SPRINGFIELD This year, the Massachusetts Senior Games is hoping to entice more athletes to give their games a "tri."

That's "tri" as in triathlon. For the first time in the Games 18 year history, the July 5 triathlon event will be open to athletes of all ages, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in each age category.

"Our youngest category will be ages zero to 19," Carl Fetterol, coordinator of the Massachusetts Senior Games, told Reminder Publications. "Our oldest with be 90-plus. Last year our oldest competitor was 89."

Fetterol said the event, which will take place on July 5 on the campus of Springfield College, will begin with a 400-meter (one-quarter mile) swim in the Art Linkletter Natatorium followed by a 20K (12.4 mile) bike ride around the campus.

"It's a loop around Springfield College we call the King Street Loop. They complete it several times, " he said.

The last leg of the event is a 5K (3.1 mile) road race on the Springfield College track.

Fetterol said he hopes that by opening up the triathlon to all ages, the Senior Games can capitalize on the current interest in this type of event.

"Recently, over 200 people participated in a triathlon in Ludlow," he said. "They paid $60 to pre-register, or $70 the day of the race. To enter our Senior Games event only costs $45."

Interested athletes can register online at www.maseniorgames.org. The cutoff date to register for the triathlon is July 3.
