EAST LONGMEADOW East Longmeadow High School junior varsity baseball coach Kevin Andrew Richards of Somers, Conn., was flown to Ft. Worth, Texas, in April to receive the Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship for 2008. Three undergraduate and two graduate students in the nation in the field of health, physical education, recreation and dance are chosen each year to receive this high award.
"It is my belief that it is the responsibility of the physical educator to encourage students to find activities that they can enjoy outside the classroom in order to keep themselves active and in healthy physical condition," Richards said. "In addition, I have been touched by the joy in the eyes of most children while participating in games and activities in physical education at the elementary level. I hope that by participating in a quality physical education program they will be able to carry that love for physical activity throughout their lives."
Richards presented a program at the National Convention in Texas that he developed for the Parks and Recreation Department of Somers, Conn., called "Moving Together: Promoting Affective Development in Children through Cooperative Games."
He will be graduating from Springfield College this spring as a Physical Education major with a minor in health and coaching.
Richards has accepted Purdue University's graduate assistantship in the Department of Health and Kinesiology to continue his master's studies in the fall of 2008.
