Basketball Hall of Fame announces Springfield Day

SPRINGFIELD The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announces this year's annual "Springfield Day at The Hall of Fame" on Dec. 21 which coincides with the 118th anniversary of the first game of basketball that was played on this date in 1891. "Springfield Day at The Hall of Fame" will allow every city resident and city employee the opportunity to enjoy the Hall of Fame museum free of charge.

In addition, the Hall of Fame will also show an exclusive viewing of this year's Enshrinement Ceremony in the Hall of Fame Theater. The 2009 Enshrinement Ceremony took place on Sept. 11 in downtown Springfield's historic Symphony Hall, which was a star-studded affair attended by over 2,500 who were on hand to witness the induction of Michael Jordan, David Robinson, Jerry Sloan, John Stockton and C. Vivian Stringer. The Class of 2009 also commemorated the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's 50th anniversary in Springfield, which was originally established in 1959 on the campus of Springfield College, where the game was invented.

Springfield Day at the Hall of Fame was created in 2006 when Springfield's Tip-Off Committee announced the end of a 27 year tradition of hosting an NCAA Division I Basketball game in Springfield known as the Tip-Off Classic, but then created the birth of this new event to celebrate basketball, the city of Springfield and the Basketball Hall of Fame.

During the day on Dec. 21, the Hall of Fame will run a series of shooting and trivia contests with prizes that include tickets to an upcoming NBA D-League Springfield Armor home game at the MassMutual Center.

The Hall of Fame is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday through Friday and until 5 p.m. on Saturday. Regular adult admission is $16.99 and $11.99 for ages five to 15. Under five years is free. Senior citizens can enjoy a discount admission of $13.99. Annual pass is $39.99. Parking is free.
