Blue Sox drop two straight

June 19, 2013
HOLYOKE – The Holyoke Blue Sox have had a strong start to the 2013 season, but suffered a pair of setbacks this week.

Against the Danbury Westerners on June 18, the Blue Sox dropped a 5-2 decision.

Joel Fisher, a catcher from Michigan State, recorded two hits for the Blue Sox, who were shut out for eight innings before scoring two in the ninth.

The Blue Sox also fell to the Mystic Schooners 7-5. Michigan center fielder Jacob Cronenvorth reached base three times – two walks and a single – and scored three runs.

The loss to Mystic snapped a four-game winning streak for Holyoke, including recent victories over Newport and North Adams.

Against Newport, the Blue Sox felled the Gulls thanks to a 10th-inning home run by Cronenworth who led off the frame with a no-doubt shot to right field that cleared the high fence, giving them a 4-3 victory.

Holyoke held a 3-0 advantage, but Newport chipped away and scored the tying run on an RBI double to force extra innings and spoil a solid outing for Holyoke starter Jordan Hillyer.

The Kennesaw State pitcher threw 6.2 innings, allowing two runs – one earned – while striking out eight.

Holyoke followed that up with a 1-0 win over the SteepleCats. Brendan Hendriks, a first baseman from the University of San Francisco, capped off the game with a walk-off bases-loaded walk, scoring Kennesaw State outfielder Jacob Bruce from third. Hendriks drew the free pass after USC outfielder Vahn Bozoian was intentionally walked with runners on first and third.

The walk-off rewarded the Blue Sox pitching, which was strong throughout. Buffalo's Michael Burke spun a seven-inning gem, allowing just five hits while not allowing a run. Both of his outings have come against North Adams and he has dominated, allowing one unearned run in 16.1 innings of work.

Cumberland University's Anthony Gomez and Stetson's Ben Rakus combined to pitch two scoreless innings with Rakus picking up the win.
