Brown named MASCAC Player of the Week |

SPRINGFIELD Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) men’s basketball player Jamal Brown, a senior forward from Springfield was named the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 22.
Brown averaged a double-double effort of 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 2-1 week for the Trailblazers, including a career-high 25 points and 14 boards in a 68-59 victory at Framingham State to go with 22 points and nine caroms in MCLA’s 84-79 triumph over Fitchburg State. He shot 62 percent (24-39) from the field for the week.
Hickson leads Daniel Webster
NASHUA, N.H. The Daniel Webster men’s basketball team was led by John Hickson of Springfield, who scored 13 points and tied for the team-high in rebounds with nine in a 50-47 win over Elms College on Jan. 21.
Madera competes at SC invite
SPRINGFIELD Zack Madera of Southwick took fifth place in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.15 as the Westfield State men’s indoor track and field team finished sixth in the highly competitive Springfield College Inviational on Jan. 21.
Madera also took seventh in the 200.
Cox wins two for Owls
WESTFIELD Junior Katie Cox of South Hadley was a double winner, finishing first in the 200 freestyle (2:09.00) and 100 freestyle (59.85) as the Westfield State University (WSU) women’s swimming and diving team opened the spring semester portion of its schedule with a 145-121 victory over Bridgewater State University on Jan. 21.
HCC falls despite strong effort
HOLYOKE Holyoke’s Jess Santiago, a sophomore guard, netted 12 points, while fellow sophomore guard Amanda Grant of Westfield scored 10 points and freshman center Anastasia Walker of West Springfield pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with 8 points, but the Holyoke Community College women’s basketball team couldn’t stave off a late run by Massasoit Community College in a 83-74 loss on Jan. 15.
AIC competes at URI invitational
KINGSTON, R.I Junior Sanya Foster of Springfield tied for fourth in the shot put with a throw of 12.08 meters as the American International College (AIC) men’s and women’s track & field teams competed at the University of Rhode Island’s Sorlein Invitational.

On the men’s side, freshman Caldwell Miller of Springfield finished 18th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.37 seconds and finished 23rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.19 seconds. Jhon Wielblad of Ludlow finished 13th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.75 seconds.
HCC edges UConn Avery Point
HOLYOKE Springfield’s Ruben Delrosario led the way with 22 points as the Holyoke Community College men’s basketball team saw four Cougars posted double digit scoring efforts in a 73-70 win over University of Connecticut Avery Point on Jan. 18.
Holyoke’s Eloy Figueroa scored 16 points and Denzel Washington of Springfield added 10 points.
SC places fourth in home meet
SPRINGFIELD Agawam’s Jenn Kapinos placed eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:44.49 as the Springfield College women’s indoor track and field team finished fourth in a home meet featuring 10 teams on Jan. 21.
AIC men’s hoops falls in OT
COLCHESTER, Vt. Sophomore forward Brennan Cooper, a Springfield native, contributed 10 points, but AIC fell in overtime to St. Michael’s College, 81-76, on Jan. 14.
