EAST LONGMEADOW – Sarah Venn, a senior at East Longmeadow High School, has been selected as the recipient of the “MIAA Student-Athlete of the Month Award" for October.

A member of the East Longmeadow High School cross country team, Sarah received a varsity letter her freshmen year. During her sophomore and junior year, an illness prevented her from participating on the team. However, she served as the team’s manager during each season and now as a senior, she has returned to become a consistent point scorer.

Academically, Venn carries a senior course load that includes Advanced Placement Physics, Advanced Placement Calculus and Honors English. She has earned a 4.59 grade point average and serves as the secretary of East Longmeadow High School’s National Honor Society.

As a junior, Venn was awarded the George Eastman Young Leaders Award for students who display strong leadership, high grades in challenging courses, and who are involved in extensive extra-curricular activities.

Venn has demonstrated strong leadership skills throughout her school and community. She has attended various leadership conferences at both Wheaton College and Worcester State University, as well as the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) spring conference. She is the secretary for the Western MASC and helped this group of Student Council members organize and run a bocce tournament at the Special Olympics in Greenfield.

Venn also works with local youth groups and has served on her school hiring committees.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Student-Athlete of the Month Award is presented on a monthly basis to one male and one female student-athlete who display excellence in the areas of academics, athletics and community service. Students in grades 9 through 12 who attend MIAA member schools are eligible to receive the award.

Monthly award winners will receive a certificate of recognition and be featured on MIAA.net. Nominations for the award may be submitted by principals, athletic directors, teachers, coaches, guidance counselors or other school administrators. A complete list of MIAA Student-Athlete of the Month Award recipients and finalists can be found under the Educational Athletics and Leadership sections at www.miaa.net.
